I'm trying to help my son solve a extra credit math problem, but am coming up totally stumped. Looking for some mathematicians to give some guidance here. I'm sorry about the formatting , but I haven't figured out a way to get it any better. L=Left R =Right * = the # that needs to be solved for. The dashed lines is my attempt to seperate the combinations. There are nine 3 digit combinations. Here's the problem.

The athletes training for the marathon all have combination locks on their lockers. Find the secret to figuring out the missing numbers for all of the combinations. Look carefully.

L R L--- L R L--- L R L---
12 9 5--- 7 8 *--- 11 * 6---

L R L--- L R L--- L R L---
10 5 *--- 4 16 *--- 3 * 18---

L R L--- L R L--- L R L---
8 9 *--- 2 14 *---- 13 7 *----

What numbers are missing from each combination. What is the secret, for all of them.

Any help will be much appreciated.

On the bottom right corner on paint you can change the length and width of the page and on the bottom they show numbers sorta like a grid or something... is there a way to figure out how big is an 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of paper. I already tried making the page 8 1/2 x 11 and its a tiny tiny square so i was thinking we cant use inches but i'm not the best at math we could say so if anyone knows post it here and ill give you 10 points.

A group of four students wish to cross a bridge without side rails in the middle of the jungle very late at
night. They have one lantern to share. No one may take a step without holding the lantern (it's dark at
night with no moon). No more than two people may be on the bridge at one time, not even for a
moment. When two students walk together, they must move at the rate of the slowest person. What is
the shortest time it would take for all of them to get across? Use the following information to solve the
problem:
• The first student, Joe, can cross the bridge alone in 5 minutes.
• The second student, Torey, can cross the bridge alone in 10 minutes.
• The third student, Sarah, can cross the bridge alone in 20 minutes.
• The fourth student, Mike, can cross the bridge alone in 25 minutes.
