Astronomy & Space - December 2006

Every time I search for reasons we've spent $145 billion on the space shuttle program, I see reasons like fixing the space station, experiments on the effects of weightlessness, etc. Nothing, it seems, of any true weight or substance. Nothing that will change the course of humankind. Can someone provide a good reason for the crazy amount of money we're spending?

that humans and aliens are like two ants at either side of the saharah desert, though they both exist, they will never come into contact.

Assuming that space is curved, and that no-thing exists outside of space, and that there is no 'outside' space, then if one travelled in a straight line from this planet in any direction, presumably at some point one should return to earth. So, if one left earth in a starship travelling at the speed of light in a straight line how long would the journey take? And, if at the speed of light time passes slower than on earth, then how much younger would you be than a person of identical age as you, that had stayed on earth?

OK, so if I imagine the Earth to be the size of an apple, how big and how far away would the sun and the other planets be relative to our apple sized Earth?
Do you have a better example, rather than using the Earth as an apple?

ok, so they smash together, don't know why, they just do.
they smash into a million bits of cosmic dust and gravity pulls the particles together into a new venearth that is twice the size of earth.
1. what would this do to its relationship with the sun.
2. what (if any) atmospehre would it have, and
3.what kind of weather would it have.
4.if you have ever heard of the canopy theory, would this be possible after this cataclysmic catastrophe. (but only after all the lawyers are dead and school gets closed).

If "you" agree with big bang then there must be a point of origin!
The galaxies are moving away from somewhere.
I've never read about or even heard of this being discussed on telly.
If its expanding, then where from?
If at all possible could you tell me the distance between "IT" and Earth in AU's.
Thank you and a Merry Christmas to all who answer.
