The overall shuttle program is called the Space Transportation System, or "STS." NASA oversees the program and coordinates flight requirements for all shuttle missions, each of which is designated with an STS number.

Space transportation System. each shuttle flight is designated a mission number, which always starts with "STS-". the first ever shuttle launch was designated "STS-1" and so on and so forth until we get to STS-116, the current shuttle mission that just landed today (Friday). the next shuttle mission is designated STS-117 which is scheduled for launch no earlier than march 2007
