When it's winter here is it summer over there?
I'm confused. I always thougt that winter came because the Earth was farthest away from the sun at that point. That means the whole world is in winter at one time correct? I keep hearing people say winter here summer over there. does the southern and northern hemispheres have opposite seasons?

Having always heard about this phenomena_to me that's what it is_and very briefly reading about it in Wikipedia right now, two main questions come to mind?:

Did those places (or some of them) ever returned to normal, healthy terrain? And, what was the consequence, healthwise, to so much being buried in so much dust? Plus the dust storms, which must have made this something otherwordly to the ones who'd never experienced it before?

how do you do these problems:
by the way *= squared
~factoring monomials first~ (factor the expression)
1) 3x* + 54x + 243
2) 8y* - 28y - 60
3) 112a* - 168a + 63
4) u* + 7u
5) -v* + 2v - 1

Equations in standard form (solve the equation)
1)x* + 9x = -20
2)5p* - 25 = 4p* + 24
3)(w + 6)* = 3(w + 12) - w*

I realize that it's a lot of problems for one question but it you could do one of the first equations and one of the second equations I would really appreciate it. Also do you think you could show me the steps on how to to these. I am so very lost! Please help and thanks! Will choose best answer!!!

THIS IS sort of a combinations of math and history, because it's well, the history of math, so i need help finding 3 people from the past, the teacher gives us clues

1st one, male, born in greece about 287 BC, figured out the value for PI,

2nd one, gender unknown, born in paris, birth time unknown, developed a concept which now is called 'analytical geometry'

3rd one, male, born in 1718 in to a wealthy and literate family, when 13, learned to speak 7 languages, at age 21 (i think), was already discussing complex complex philosophical questions with adults on a regular basis, also Published "two - volume Analytical Institutions", x2y=4a2(2a-y)

those are the only ones that i dont know yet, so HELP!

math problem: You want to order a deli platter for a sports banquet. You need 12 lbs of meat and cheese. You want twice as much meat as cheese on the platter and the same amount of ham and turkey. The price per pound is $4.95 for ham, $6.99 for turkey, $7.99 for roast beef, and $4.36 for cheese. How many pounds of each should you order if you plan to spend $64.24?

- We have been working with matrices and linear systems. So I know I should set it ups a linear system or a matrix but I have no clue what to do. I have been working on this for so long. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

First of all, please don't answer "Do your homework"

A climber left base camp at 5AM to ascend a 7400-M peak. The climber gained altitude at the rate of 240 m/h and at 8 AM was at the 6500-M level.

a.) Find the elevation of the base camp
b.)At what time did the climber reach the summit?

These have to be described w/ a linear function, not algebraically.
