We must always have some sort of crisis going at all times. This is what generates emotion and dollars for those who control the oil (or whatever product or service that is being pushed). This causes fads and fashion.

A man called Hubbert predicted in the 1950s that Texas oil would peak in the 1970s. They all called him a pinko liberal alarmist nut.
Texas oil peaked in the 1970s.
Using his methods of prediction, oil production is expected to peak just about now, and some experts think it already has.
If there were any more oilfields around the size of those in the Middle East, they would have been noticed by now. The oil reserves in Brazil and around the Caspian are not as big as all that.
In addition, demand for oil is increasing extremely rapidly as China and India industrialise. It's not at approaching $100 a barrel for nothing.
There are plenty of scams around. This is not one of them.

They have been saying the oil is running out since the 1920s or ever before that. They don't know but it gets some attention
