When it's winter here is it summer over there?
I'm confused. I always thougt that winter came because the Earth was farthest away from the sun at that point. That means the whole world is in winter at one time correct? I keep hearing people say winter here summer over there. does the southern and northern hemispheres have opposite seasons?

it's winter when the earth rotates and is at the point where you are farther away from the equator. Yes they do.

When its summer in the northern hemisphere it is winter in the
southern hemisphere. Thats because the earth is tilted on its
axis relative to its orbital plane. Also, when its summer in the
northern hemisphere, the earth is at it furthest distance from
the sun (about 96 million miles) and in the winter its nearest
(about 89 million miles.) Australian summers are a bit hotter.
There are a lot of opposites in the southern hem. including
the direction the water swirls when you flush.

the season has nothing to do with the distance from the sun. it is contingent on the angle at which the sun hits the earth. becuase the sun is tailted at a angle when the north receves the light we have summer and the south has winter. as the year progresses however the tilt of the sun allows the southern hemospher to receve more sun allowing the south summer. it is for this reason that parts of alaska can experince only 3 hours of light at some times and 3 hours of dark at other times

It's to do with the way the Earth wobbles on its axis. The sun appears to move up and down between the two Tropics (which is why they are there)

So it's summer here as the sun appears to move towards the Tropic of Capricorn and winter in the north hemisphere.

When its winter in one hemisphere, its summer in the other or they are just two seasons apart. right now in southern hemisphere it is spring, and in North America its Fall. Seasons do occur to earth tilting as it spins around the sun.

ACTUALLY THE CHANGES IN SEASON ARE CAUSED BY THE AXIAL TILT OF THE EARTH AND WHEN IT'S WINTER IN THE NORTHERN HEMISPHERE IT'S SUMMER IN THE SOUTHERN. AND WHEN IT'S FALL IN THE NORTHERN IT'S SPRING IN THE SOUTHERN.

if you live in Austrailia the seasons are opposite from northern North America. When it is summer, we, Canadians are closer to the sun making Austrailia farther because it is far south of the equator. That's basically the answer.
