Without being able to feel, a robot can never be motivated to improve itself intellectually. Only pain or pleasure can motivate anyone to self-perfect. Right?

A bullet of mass 12g strikes a solid surface at a speed of 300 m s^ -1. The bullet penetrates to a depth of 3.0 cm.

(i) Calculate the average force resisting the motion of the bullet in the solid.

The solution:

F = ma
= 0.012 * (-1.5) * 10^6
= -18 000 N

Average resistive force is 18 000 N

Why is it that the force is positive? Why can't we just leave it as negative? Why must we must change it to positive?

for the problem y = 4 cos (x/2 + pi/2) there are 2 ways to discover the period.

1. period = 2pi/b and in this case (x/2 + pi/2) = 1/2(x + pi)
thus 2pi/.5 = 4pi

2. however when I try and solve algebraically for the inequality:
0 less than equall to 1/2(x+pi) less than equall to 2pi
I always get an interval of -pi, pi wich has a period of 2pi.

What am I doing wrong in # 2?

A highway patrol plane flies 3 mi above a level, straight road at a steady 120 mi/h. The pilot sees an oncoming car and with radar determines that at the instant the line-of-sight distance from plane to car is 5 mi the line-of-sight distance is decreasing at the rate of 160 mi/h. Determine the car’s speed along the highway.

Shouldn't our speed remain constant? No galaxies should affect any other gravitationally because the big bang should move all matter away from eachother, and yet we see galaxies running into eachother. I feel so small.

The starting equation was 1/√x which i plugged into the theorem and got this {(x^(1/2) - (x+h)^(1/2)}/{h(x+h)^1/2(x)^(1/2)} So i changed it to ^1/2 to make it eaiser. But i can not figure out how to get the h out of the top to cancel out the bottom so i can plug 0 in for h. Any help on the 2nd step would be wonderful.

Thanks,

Brad

So I had this weird occurrence a few weeks ago- I took 35 percocet (5 mg oxycodone, 350 mg of acetaminophen per tablet) and well nada happened. Literally (well aside of passing out and vomiting all night and the next day).

This thing puzzles me a lot , I read that 10 mg of acetaminophen is supposed to cause damage to the liver, yet it apparently did not .
How is this possible? -Can pharmacokynetics vary that much ? I am 180 lbs and generally healthy (exercise a lot, follow healthy diet, do not drink at all) but it was over 13 g for christ sakes.

I seem to have high tolerances to some medication (namely for example I can take over 10 mg of ativan and not pass out -I will be quite sleepy, but generally can function) , -I was told that some people pass out from as little ast 1.5 mg.

Can it be some sort of disorder?

Isn't algebra a little out dated? We now have computers that can graph and find all of the algebraic problems we need solved, like profit analysis for buisnesses. I am by no means saying abolish all algebra from schools, but merely to compact the course down to the absolute basics and necessities that will actually be used in most people's day to day life and careers and incorporate it into another mathematical course. I believe that to have multiple years of algebra be mandatory is a waste of government money. Shouldn't extensive study in this course only be optional for students going into a field of work that is algabraically heavy? What do you think?
