Without being able to feel, a robot can never be motivated to improve itself intellectually. Only pain or pleasure can motivate anyone to self-perfect. Right?

The question of a machine experiencing emotion has been debated for decades. Certainly they can be made to feign emotion. 'Motivation' for the purpose of optimization is much easier. Programmers are free to choose the objective function any way they choose. That's what guides all computer optimization. Artificial neural networks have a learning mechanism closer to that of humans. Let the network find answers, and then tell it which of those answers are good answers. That technology, which sounded very promising, has shown only limited usefulness.

Any robot or machine or computer can be programmed to improve itself, to the limits of the capabilities its programmers have given it, and using the tools its programmers have given it. This is completely independent of any concept of feeling emotion.
