Unfortuantely, pepsin is secreted to help digest proteins. To be more exact, pepsinogen is unactivated pepsin that can be converted into pepsin by HCl.
To protect the stomach lining from HCl damage, your stomach has a mucus coat that regenerates every 2 weeks. Plus, your stomach secretes HCl because pepsin works best in a very very acidic environment of like 3 pH. So your hunch about pepsin in the stomach is right, but stomach lining is the mucus.
Hope it cleared up a few things ^^

The stomach has secretory cells called "cheif cells" which secrete pepsinogen which is the inactive zymogen form of pepsin. When pepsinogen enters the highly acidic environment of the interior of the stomach, it is cleaved into its active form, pepsin. Pepsin is a strong degradtive enzyme used in digestion. It must be secreted as an inactive zymogen so as to avoid digesting the cells its produced from. Those, again, are the cheif cells of the stomach. So, you could say that pepsin is produced in the stomach.

Yes, it (pepsinogen) is produced by the cheif cells of the stomach, not to be confused with the parietal cells of the stomach which secrete gastic acid, intrinsic factor, and HCl (which converts to, so to speak, pepsin)

Not quite. It's created in the stomach, but as pepsinogen. Pepsinogen is a zymogen - meaning its a protein that is not expressed in its active state. Hydrochloric acid (in the stomach) acts on pepsinogen to allow it to cleave (cut) itself. This forms fully active pepsin, which goes to cleave proteins (and other pepsinogen molecules) as part of digestion.
