I was walking home today during a thundersstorm, praying that I wasn't going to get hit by lightning, and I was wondering, for future reference, how likely is it to be struck by lightning when you are walking on a sidewalk with two and three story buildings surrounding you?

Because it felt pretty likely as I was walking, but lightning strikes what is tallest, right?

The speeds of these objects were given as:

Earth around the sun -- 67,108 mph
Earth and sun around the Milky Way galaxy -- 559,234 mph
Milky Way galaxy through space -- 1,342,161 mph

I have no quibble with the answer, and I understand the first and second objects, but my question is, how do you determine the speed of our galaxy through space? What is the frame of reference? What fixed point is this speed relative to?

Wouldn't they have better things to do like share their wisdom and technology with us or eat us and steal our planet's natural resources? Why do people who claim to have been abducted by aliens always say that they were anal probed? It seems like such a waste.

My six year old sister came home one day saying how the scientists blew up Pluto. She said they talked about it in class? I wasn't sure what she meant, assuming it was about Pluto not being a planet anymore.

Within the last week Bekki B was selected by “Voters” for ten (10) “Best answers” sequentially (#1 being most recent) as follows:

Bekki # Votes to Closest Answerer # Votes:

1. 9 to 8
2. 10 to 9
3. 9 to 7
4. 9 to 8
5. 9 to 8
6. 9 to 8
7. 9 to 8
8. 9 to 8
9. 11 to 9
10. 3 to 2

This information is easily verifiable and I recommend you do so. Keep in mind that this data excludes Bekki’s “Best” when selected directly by the Asker or when she was the only answerer. The quality of her answers range from nonsensical to well-written without a significant deviation in this pattern of voting.

What are the statistical odds of always beating out the next nearest answerer by 1-2 votes? Is cheating acceptable to enhance status here? Is it o.k. or funny to cheat other answers out of being selected who worked hard to provide a good answer choice? Do some people take the imaginary points awarded here too seriously?
