Lance Armstrong bikes at a constant speed up the Alpe d'Huez, a famous mountain pass. Assume his teammates do such a good job riding ahead of him that he can draft behind them and encounter no air resistance. This climb is described as "beyond classification" in terms of its difficulty. The climb is 13.8 km long at a 7.9% average grade (the grade, as a decimal, is the tangent of the angle of inclination). Assume that the combined mass of Lance and his bicycle is 83 kilograms. What is the magnitude of the work he does against the force of gravity?

I am completely stumped on this question. It's from a test I already did, so this is for curiosity, not for someone else to do my homework.

If a company is building 478 houses and stand to profit $15,000 from a 2 bedroom model and $16,000 from a three bedroom model, and they are seeking to make exactly $5,713,000 in profit, how many of each house do they need to make?

Could someone show me how to solve this. I don't even care if you give me an answer, just let me know how to do it myself.... The answer must be numbers, not formulas. I just don't get how to solve it.

I read in a sci-fi novel that if one end of a tungsten rod is heated, and the other is chilled, there will be an apreciable electical current along the length. And, with a very, very large beam of tugsten, you can sink one end in a deep body of water, put the other end in a green house on the surface, and draw off the current by a wire in the middle. Voila! "Free" energy.

Of course, i have no idea if this is even vaguely factual. That's where you come in.

Question 1: Find the exact numerical value of

2sin^2 60°+tan^2 30°-cos 45°

Question 2: Simplify the following expressions:

a) sin A. cos (180°- A). cos (90° + A)

b) cos (90°+q). sin(90°-q) + sin (90°+q). cos (90°-q)

note: the q is an (unknown I think) angle symbol the one with the oval with the line through the middle of it).

c) sin (180° - x). cos x ¸(divide by, large line separating both lines)
tan (180° - x)

Question 3:Use your calculator to evaluate the following correct to 2 decimal places (I haven't got my graphics calculator with me...long story)

a) sin58.7°
b) tan 31°8'
c) cos(-73°42' )

Question 4: Answer true or false to each of the following:
a) sin^2a= (sin a)^2
b) sin^2 41°+cos^2 41°=1
c) tan 53°12' = 1.33 (correct to 2dp)
d) cos (10°+30°)=cos 10°+cos 30°
e) cos (90°- x)=sin x

Thankyou for your help. Please write down which each working and answer is for clearly (question 1, 2, 3 or 4 and a, b, c etc).

There are a lot of exotic theories floating around for future star travel: ion drive (slow, but reliable); solar sails; laser propulsion; nuclear fusion drives. None of these are phony "Star Trek" warp drives (doesn't make ANY scientific sense--they'd be crushed to death!), but which one is the most feasible?
