Not sure how to spell it but it's pronounced val-yoom. I watched Girl,Interrupted tonight and Brittany Murphy's character Daisy kept wanting certain drugs and she said something about a valium and I wanted to know what it is and what it does? Thanks :)

Alright. Thank ya'll very much for the answers. If you want, can you tell me why Brittany Murphy's character daisy abused this drug? As in, what good did it do her to abuse it, did it bring a high or was she suicidal with it or what? How is it so addictive, what makes it addicting?

ok, everyone's answers had a little bit of correct info in it. Just want to set the record straight. I was a paramedic for 7 years and worked in an Emergency Department for 4 of that. Valium is in a class of drugs called BENZODIAZAPINES ...NOT benzodiazaPAMS. The USP(United States Pharmacopia) name for Valium is Diazapam. Valium is not a tranquelizer nor is it a "strong" drug as one suggested. It is what it is, a benzodiazapine. It's used for anxiety, alcoholic withdrawl, muscle relaxer, sleep and in an emergency situation, seizures.

VALIUM : the generic name is Diazepam. It is used to relieve anxiety, nervousness, and tension associated with anxiety disorders. It is also used to treat certain types of seizure disorders and muscle spasms.
This drug can be addictive - already 30 years old or so

Valium is a benzodiazapine.It's to treat people who suffer from bad anxiety.It's not commonly prescribed anymore due to people abusing it,its very addictive.

As with all things In the wrong hands very dangerous. if anyone took large amounts of any drugs , at the least they will be poorly at most probably dead. with varying degrees of damage inbetween the two Please do not mess with your mind or ours.
