Am object with weight W is dragged along a horizontal plane by a force acting along a rope attached to the object. If the rope makes an angle of θ with the plane, the thmagnitude of the force is
F= μW/(μsinθ+cosθ)
where μ is a positive constant called the coefficient of friction and where 0 is less than or equal to θ and θ is less than or equal to (pi/2). Show that F is minimized when tanθ=μ.

I need to find the mass of Neptune and I have this data:

Planet Neptune , at closest approach , is about 29.1AU from Earth.
At that distance, Neptunes Angular Diameter is 2.3"
It's moon Triton moves in a circular orbit with an angular dimater of 33.6"
abd a period of 5.9 days.

So I know to use a modified version of Keplers law to get the mass but the
Angular diameters are setting me off...I don't know how they fit in!
Please help me!

Why for diff equation is e^(alpha*x) substituted say for

d2y/dx2 - ky(x) = 0
say K = 4
d2y/dx2 - 4y(x) = 0

y(x) = e^(alpha*x)

substituting e^(alpha*x) we find
(alpha^2 -4)y(x) = 0
alpha = +/- 2

How does this work?

Imagine a frictionless pulley (a solid cylinder) of unknown mass M and radius r = 0.200 m which is used to draw water from a well. A bucket of mass m = 1.50 kg is attached to a massless cord wrapped around the pulley. The bucket starts from rest at the top of the well and falls for t = 3.00 s before hitting the water h = 9.99 m below the top of the well.

(i) What is the angular velocity of the pulley when the bucket hits the water? (use the relation between the angular velocity and the linear velocity)

(j) What is the angular momentum of the pulley when the bucket hits the water? (use the moment of inertia and the angular velocity of the pulley)

(k) What is the kinetic energy of the bucket when it hits the water?

(l) What is the kinetic energy of the pulley when the bucket hits the water?

(m) What is the total kinetic energy of the system when the bucket hits the water?

Is the total kinetic energy smaller, equal to (within +/- 1%), or larger than the potential energy change?
