Yes, my hunch is that it is possible to tap energy from lightning. Now to the second part of your query - how? That seem to be the most difficult aspect. But let us try. This scientific endeavour would require the narrowing down of the places, where lightning is more frequent. There scientific stations would be put in place with super sensitive sensors. High towers would be installed - which would be the first ones to be hit by the lightning and from there on mechanical work could be carried out by allowing this energy to be utilised. I know this sounds as far fetched - but please remember that no practical idea has ever been put to shape without a bit of imagination. This is how far my imagination runs - over to you now for giving new wings and more flight to this imagination.

Mr. Viddu, I have been thinking about the problem for quite some times now(about 10 years). I think i have come up with a unique design of an induction motor, which can convert the energy of the lightening into energy. Yes, energy can be obtained from the lightening. But the voltage of it is so huge, that a huge system is required to tap this energy. Moreover, this energy is not going to be sustained, and continuous. Hence a huge storage device is also required to supply this energy during the lean times. Whatever may be the design of the generator, one thing is sure, you cannot rely completely on this system, and an alternate system of energy is required alongside it.

Lightning has tremendous amount of energy. Till today no one has been able to make a capacitor or any other instrument to energy obtained from lightening since their is enormous amount of electricity in a normal lightening which can lit up newyork city for 60 days.We can hope that some day someone will invent a device which could store the energy from the lightening and thus could light up the whole world rich or poor.

Lots of energy could be extracted from lightning...if you can predict where it will strike.
We do know that it stikes the Sears building in Chicago a lot, for instance, but the number of strikes per year are not adequate to spend a lot of money to collect and distribute the electricity. Our electric power must be more stable than that and not have spikes of power for a millisecnd

you can obtain heat energy from it if you can get it to hit the right spot, like with a lightning rod
