I have always been fascinated by earthquakes but this has always confused me. Los Angeles lies atop an entire network of smaller (yet powerful) faults while San Francisco has fewer (yet much larger) faults. Which of the two cities experiences quakes more frequently (for those of you who live and or work in either one of the cities)?

I am a Geography and Geology student and I would like to come up with a good senior thesis which would prepare me for the phd program in the Geology Dept. I am interested in Geomorphology, Human Ecology, Mass Movements, Tectonics and Geographic Information Science. I am particularly interested in the Kashmir region or anywhere along the base of the Himilayas on the India/ South side. Any ideas?

What I mean to say is, if 2 ,e.g., balls are attached to the end of a string which is,e.g. around one's finger or around a pole etc. and they are released to knock against each other then why don't they continue knocking each other forever? Where does the force which allowed therm to knock each other disappear to?
