Or another way of asking is; can morals come from within or do they have to come externally? And if you believe the latter, what happens if a person has some internal conflict with an externally imposed set of morals?

I'm asking because I often see answers to questions referencing morals and religion...

eg, when will they realise that George Bush and Hilary Clinton represent the economic interests of their own elite section of society whilst disingenuously prating about 'the American people' or 'Western civilisation' or 'freedom'?

Would the police, while in the process of fingerprinting and taking the requisite mug shot, be surprised to find a tattoo on Hillary? Gangland ink that illustrates her allegiance to the human smuggling Snakeheads?

Take into account that Bill, Albert, and Hillary herself sold the sea-port at Long Beach to an entity that is basically a front for the People's Liberation Army of China back in the '90s. And when this fact is compounded with all the shady campaign contributions Hillary receives from dubious sources located in San Fran's China Town, would it then be a stretch to think Hillary's coffers are brimming with Triad generated funds?

don't get me wrong it was a bad day for many people. BUT america has killed over a Million people in iraq, and almost more soldiers have died there than people who died in the trade center, and thousands of soldiers and civilian afghanistans, what makes you think that 9/11 is worse than all of these atrocities (if not you then most of the u.s) ? do you think that the life of someone in america is more important than the life of someone in iraq ? because if you do then i gotta tell you, if you visit a graveyard in america, and one in iraq, you will see they're not very different, both are filled with darkness and sadness, the agony of crying mothers, fathers, wives, haunted by the memories of those who have left them.. so what gives ? why is 9/11 talked about almost every day as if it's the worst thing in the world, when it doesn't even compare to some of the things we've seen in these past few years ?

I've been seeing it more and more on here lately, and it is really starting to bug me. And this seems to some from those who call others intolerant. Yet I just got done reading several answers saying that they would do away with religion one way or another. The reason this bugs me is because I'm Roman Catholic, but I have plenty of Atheist friends, they don't say anything close to this, and actually respect others for their beliefs. And for some reason, I get the feeling that some of those people actually think that Communism is the way to go.

Enough is enough, if NIMBYs won't like the aesthetics of oil rigs, offshore tidal marine or wind turbines, why don't they pay the difference in energy costs to everyone else caused by this shortage? Higher energy costs will cause inflation and tank our economy, that's more important than ruining someone's view from their beach house? Give your elected officials what for on this. Nuke doesn't have to be the answer. This is the same fiasco Carter got us into, crying shortage yet stopping any new projects for enviromental reasons. It is a VITAL neccesity for national security and prosperity to tap into and refine federal reserves, if only to supply government stockpiles and uses of oil, it would free up that much more for public consumption. That means drill offshore or in the artic, and build more refineries in different locations instead of where they all get shut down by one hurricane, accident or terrorist attack.

I lean to the left, but I don't hate America. I think America's great, even if our government doesn't make the best decisions. That's not necessarily a reflection on the American character, spirit, and values, though.

I even served in the U.S. Army for 6 years, including 2 tours overseas.

Even though I served over there, I don't support the war, and never did (part of the reason I got out last year). It's a drain on our resources that we could be spending here. There are a lot of Iraqis that resent our presence, and those who like us are mainly just like our money.

My conservative friends say this makes me unpatriotic. I don't know what more I can do to prove them otherwise.

All I heard from the left during the past elections is how they were going to get to the bottom of why the gas prices were so high. I'm still waiting to hear why. Maybe it's because OPEC controls oil prices and not Bush. What is really sad is the the government makes 10x more off a gallon of gas in taxes than the oil companies. So where are all the Democrats on this issue? No wonder the approval rating is at 11%.

Yes, I'm an atheist.

A Conservative asked a question about why atheists haven't done anything good for us. Here's a small list of atheists that have contributed to humanity, knowledge, and helped millions along the way.

Most Scientists, biologist, astronomers...are atheists.
Thomas Edison...electricity, light bulb.
Bill Gates...Given billions to charity, after his computer revolution.
Francis Crick...discoverer of the DNA code.
Marie Curie..countless discoveries in physics, and chemistry.
Carl Sagan...The greatest Astronomer of all time.
Lance Armstrong...7 time Tour de France winner.
Warren Buffet...donated 37 billion to charities.
Charles Schul...creator of Peanuts.
Pat Tillman...Gave up NFL career to serve and die for his nation.

Stephen Hawking, Albert Einstein, Ben Franklin, Mikhail Gorbachev, Mark Twain...ALL ATHEISTS. They've done a lot of good for us!!

"It is far better to grasp the Universe as it really is, than to persist in delusions." Carl Sagan.
