I would like to hear people's opinion on the Canadian welfare system and peoples personal experiences with them. IE: How they were treated, does anything need to be changed, etc.

I am now not clear about the Americans' positional integrity; after 9/11 they wanted a President who would foster revenge against anybody who perpetrated the offence against the nation; a president who would act against even the world powers if need be, to show that American enemies "..cannot win..". They demonstrated strength and patriotism that we admired. Now they blame George Bush so loud yet they pushed him onto the ninth ladder step! Why such a turn, as if Bush made the mistake alone? (Defeat, despair or what?). Non-USA, but enthusiast.

...but today's government is getting ever closer to a police state.

Is there anything that can be done to reverse the trend? (Side questions: Those of you who have actually READ 1984... do you see any parallels?)

In 1945 the US lent Britain 2 billion dollars for the war effort. In 1946 the US called in the loan, forcing Britain to renegotiate the terms. Today, 60 years later, the Bank of England made the final payment. How much were the British screwed for ? Does this mean that finally the British will stop kissing American ***?

Politicians make promises to buy votes. The money comes from taxes. But what the government is taking in is not enough to pay for all the promises, so the government "borrows" from future taxes. The "on-books" deficit is currently about $9 trillion, but the "off-books" cost of social security and medicare is over $44 trillion.

The entire US economy is only $10 trillion a year. That means that young folks today (say, under 30) are going to have to pay higher taxes than ever - and when it comes their turn to collect on promises - there will be NOTHING left.

How do the younger folks feel about paying and extra 20%-30% of their paycheck for programs that won't ever return anything to them?
