Prior to the last 50 years, the only educated and wealthy people were white land-owners (with some exceptions). The gap of well-qualified, wealthy, educated minorities (women, black, hispanic, asian) is almost closed and it won't be long before a woman or racial minority is elected. I'm thankful ANY native person can become president regardless of gender, race, religion, ethnic background. Here's to America!!!

Wow! I'm surprised at how many people immediately took offense despite the validity of the question!

The truth is:
Not many non-whites run for the position in the first place.
Whites are a majority in the United States.
The few non-whites that have vied for the position were not adequate to the voters' tastes and opinions.
United States is obsessed with racism.
Not only have we never had a black president, we've never had a Chinese, Japanese, Puerto Rican, Italian, etc. president. In fact, I don't think any of the abovementioned groups has even put forth a candidate.

I'd like to point out that the two black men that I know of that have run or put in bids for presidency, I would not have voted for, in the first place, because they are both "reverends" in some religion. According to the constitution voting for one of them would have been a grave mistake.

America was founded by land-owning, white men. It's really astounding, but not much has changed since the foundation. America's presidents have always been rich white men and will continue to be so until Americans stop buying into the lie that qualified candidates can't win the presidency because they don't fit the status quo.
BTW... not only have they all been rich, white men... they've all been protestant, too. Except for JFK, of course.
My advice to women and minority candidates?
Start at the local level and make a name for yourself. The more the bottom positions are replaced by people who AREN'T rich, white men the harder it will be for them to find support.
(I'm not saying that rich, white men are by definition bad people or undeserving. I just find it odd that no one else has ever been "qualified". Huh.)

Said it once, I'll say it again. Ask the DNC and the RNC. That opportunity has not been offered to the voters. But then again, who are we honestly going to vote for. Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson? But come 2008, Sen Barack Obama has a shot. I'm a conservative, but I respect this democrat, he is definitely a leader. I doubt I would vote for him, but it is based solely on political position. But I'd never rule out voting for a qualified democrat if that is the best option.

Because the natural colonists that founded this were. Tradition I'd suppose. One would imagine them to be decendants of those presidents. Or atleast related to that original colonist base somehow.

It's just the way it's worked out. There are numerous other consistencies - like they've all been male, etc.
