I am an english rider and I have been riding english for about 6 or 7 years (im only 13, so this is the whole time Ive been riding) Ive never ridden in a western saddle, besides at the fair rides and such when i was little. At my barn, they are holding a show and im entering it with my highstrung horse Carmel. The only problem is that i have to ride western bc it is one of the show requirements. The 2 events im doing so far are jumping 3 jumps in a row and cantering barrels. Im only worried about jumping with a western saddle. help, how do i do it??!!

THANKS :)

Whats with all the negativity to beer and riding? Maybe its just the crowd I ride with (mostly bull and Bronc rodeo types) but in a string of 10-15 riders you won't find a saddle bag that doesnt have at least a iced down 12 pack. Maybe its a age thing most of us are from 40-60. and dont laugh at our ages I still am competive in bull riding and a 50+ friend a couple of years ago finished in the top 5 bronc riders at the OK city natl champ.
So why all the negative to beer and riding? Hell Why all the negative to smoking and riding?

So yesterday I was coming in late for a doctor's appointment and it was actually daylight on my one hour commute. About 5 miles from home, I saw three skinny horses grazing alongside the road by a bean field. One was "ribby," one was "thin" and one poor little buckskin was so emaciated that I doubt he will be alive in 30 days.

Others were going for the owners to get the horses contained, and I learned how to get to their home.

Hubby says to go drop a 6x round bale in their field and try to talk to them, but how does a person like me, who is, well...perhaps more passionate than diplomatic...approach someone about starving their horses? I realize they probably can't afford hay and feed...but dang it, I'll bet they're eating every night.

There just isn't a nice way to say, "What the #$%#$@ is wrong with you @#$%$ Q%E!$@ people, why the #$^#$ are you starving your horses?!!!"

Calling the overwhelmed Humane society in a huge rural area may not be the best solution.

There is a growing concern within the equine industry about the actions and beliefs of some animal rights activists. Do you think they have legitimate concerns? Or do you think we should act to keep these groups from taking control of our industry?
I agree that practices such as tail blocking and soring should really be clamped down on and although illegal, more should be done to discourage it. However I feel that the horse industry should be applying pressure from within for change, not from activists that know nothing about the inner workings of the industry. In the majority of cases they use scaremongering tactics and half truths to further their cause - what do you think?

That opens a word Doc from the IL horsemens Council. Another question has got me thinking there are some seriously mislead people out there when it comes to horse slaughter and where this feel good ban is leading.
One Idea in IL is to just start releasing un wanted horses into shawnee natl forest or dumping them in rural areas, you know kind of like all the dumped dogs.

The people so opposed to sluaghter do a real good job of crying about it. But what exactly are they doing with the fall out from the ban? After all I would say the horses are in far worse shape now than they were pre ban, What the feel gooders can sleep better at night thinking they made a world changing difference? While ignoring the reallity of their irresponsible beliefs?
And yes they did re open Dekalb for 30 days

I have a close contact saddle that my dad bought for me when I was younger. The tag under the flap says SWS Co. Hartford England and then the year (which I don't remember) I tried to Google the name of the saddle but have not found any information on it. Please if you know of a website or have heard of this brand, send me the info on it. Thank you!

My husband tells me that buying masses of lottery tickets does not constitute sound retirement planning. However in the land of dreams, if you were given $5000 with a stipulation that you had to spend it on your animals, how would you spend it? I would spend half of it on stem cell therapy for my horse's front bow and suspensories, the rest I'm sure I'd squander - what about you?

Someone posted about PMU, what they don't realize is those hormones are needed by humans and what are their suggestions for obtaining those instead of making mankind suffer.

Same as artificial hearts, organ implantation and donation, blood transfusions, cancer treatments, brain stem studies, regeneration of nerves, etc

The list is endless, so are you for testing and healing humans?

Or

Are you for non testing and seeing mankind die from things that could of been cured at the expense of animal testing?

I have noticed within the past few days, loads of really good answers by various posters have just got slammed with masses of thumbs downs. Somebody else has also noticed and noted that in one of their answers. I'm just wondering what gives and if anyone else has become aware of this? It's getting a bit ridiculous especially when you can see that someone has spent time and effort into writing their answer and is correct in what they've put. (And I'm not talking just about myself either). What do you all think?

Several of us at my stables have noticed that all the horses are choosing to stand in the sun no matter how hot it is. I thought it might be due to flys but even when fly repellent is on they still opt for the sun. Today is 105 and again, they are all in the sun.

Thank you!!!

I am really looking into buying this girth and pad.
http://www.horse.com/products/gift-0__sku-WIJ88.html
http://www.horse.com/products/gift-0__sku-WGJ88.html

Because my horses saddle slips all the time. I cant go on trail rides, ride him hard or anything without it trying to slip over to one side. I tried this nice wool pad on him, I put a blanket over the black pad and yet when he got sweaty... STILL the saddle would slip. Though it makes sense... Wool likes to move around when your horse sweats. So i looked into these, they look very nice and i think im going to order them. Although do you think they will slip alot still? and if so what pad do you suggest getting. I have a show coming up and I cant use the wool. Last time i did western pleasure in the middle of the lope, it went completely to one side. My boy went to a trot and just followed the pony in front. But i need something before this show in october, and time to practice it.

Please informative answers.

... getting a horse one of these days so i could take him out on the trails whenever I wanted. Nothing special, no jumping, racing, just a good horse that I could enjoy time with, maybe even take him into my yard for an afternoon and groom. Is there a breed that would be best for this?

I was not bashing shanked bits or different mouth pieces, I may not have put my post together in way to get my point across but I did add to it, hopefully those who took it as me bashing them for using a shanked bit can now understand what I was trying to say. I too use shanked bits and snaffles, depending on level of training, the job at hand, etc. etc. And you are absolutely correct... ANY BIT is only as harsh as the riders hands.

I am asking this because I keep hearing all this "natural" stuff but yet the same people are using or promoting severe mouth pieces on their horses. A snaffle provides a "nutcracker" action to the mouth, the tongue, lips and bars and if used and/or fitted incorrectly (which not many talk about)can be very damaging to the horse. I was also wondering what everyone considers a snaffle... snaffle does not mean a jointed mouth piece, it means any bit that does not have leverage. A snaffle does not have a purchase and/or shanks.

Jointed mouth - nutcracker action
Mullen mouth - very mild mouth piece
French mouth - reduces the "nutcracker" very mild
Dr. Bristol - slightly more severe than the french link
Slow Twist - "nutcracker" style, stronger and more severe.
Cork Screw - Severe
Single and double twisted wire - two of the most severe

Also, when selecting a mouth piece for you horse do you consider that he may have a flat pallet?

my friends horse seems to have this problem with dragging his back legs when he's being ridden. He ends up tripping and throwing the rider and falling on his knees. He doesnt have Navicular Disease because he's dragging his back legs, not his fronts. Its not a stifle injury because he's not hot and swelling. Does anyone else know of any other disease/injuries that are related to dragging of the back legs? Any injuries that are related from the hoof right to the spine. We thought it was just lazyness but he trips up in the field too and during workouts so its more then just lazyness. Any thoughts/suggestions?
Thanxs
