Very sorry on your loss.
She should be fine- it will take her a while to get used to it, and it is heartbreaking. It may take her a week or two to adjust at the most. I would try to keep her busy right now- to keep her mind off of it as much as possible.

She's probably going to be upset for a while, but it's not something from which she'll never recover. I'm sure you know that horses keep their babies around for a while; they're not like turtles that lay eggs and bugger off. The mares tend to the foals until they are old enough to be out on their own. Losing her foal is going to be rough for her for a while, but as for how long, I really cannot say. A lot of it depends on the mare.

This horse needs you more right now than you will ever know! One of my mares dropped her colt and had the colt taken down by my recently aquired proud-cut gelding. My fault all the way for trusting someone I didn't know . Any way,I got there in time, the foal was ripped wide open,I could see the bones in her spine! I RACED her to the vet,she lived and my mare seems to have never forgotten it. She couldn't even get up when it happened,it was so close to delivery. When we got that beautiful colt back to her mother she whinnied, danced, bucked and celebrated like nothing I'd ever seen! This mare had always been difficult to trim, her back legs in particular. Now (even 8 years later) she whinnies, drops her nose into my shirt and lifts her back legs at a touch. What a great feeling!

So sorry for your loss. Mama horse probably will grieve for awhile & you can give a lot of emotional support to each other during this very sad time.
I don't know much about horses except that they're beautiful, but we live with several other animals & I've seen how depressed they can become if a loved one passes. Some of our cats have been so grief-striken that I was afraid we might lose them too. They'd need lots of extra attention & some coaxing to get them to eat.
Grief can take a while to get through. Be there for momma horse & let her be there for you. Take care.

It is not uncommon for a mare to lose a foal and depending on your plans for her future, she could offer an orphan foal an excellent start in life.
If your mare was in good condition at the time of foaling it is likely that she will produce a good quantity of milk. The mare may be anxious and if a maiden act confused. She may be very active and call for the lost foal.
If it can possibly fit with your programme please consider offering your mare as a substitute mother for the sake of her own contentment as a possible lifesaver to an orphan foal, even if for only 6 weeks.
Call the local contact acting as a 'Mothering Service' if one exists, to determine whether a newborn orphan is available and if possible have the foal travel to the mare. Following her initial upset she will be more likely to lose her milk if taken from her familiar environment especially in the initial mothering on stage.
Having another foal to 'mother' will help your mare to deal with losing her own foal, and you will be helping an orphaned foal to get the best start it can in life.

Hi you got mail01,
I would ask around to see if anyone near you have an orphan who needs mothering. Sometimes that can be the best answer. Not always but sometimes.
My mare took weeks to stop looking for her foal, silly thing is that she rejected the foal in the first place. Anyway I put her in with a weanling and she mothered the poor thing to within an inch of his sanity. It was good for both of them.
I wish you the best of luck with your girl.

She is depressed and is crying and missing her baby. But she will be okay after a while. It takes a few days to get past the initial loss for her. Spending time with her, doing things she enjoys will help her get past this better. If she has horsey friends, they will aso console her. I am sorry for your loss, losing a youngster is tough.

Your mare must not think that the foal is gone. Sad but true. I think she still believes that its somewhere. She just wants to find it - mainly to protect. Maybe try getting another foal lookable to the other one. Also find out why it died

She will be alright eventually, but she will need to grieve for a while. Horses are very social animals and they do miss other horses when they die.
