We have six, and they all love it, particularly if they are freshly groomed. Some of my horse reading has helped me be a little more tolerant of the wasted grooming time. One things the mud does is give them some protection against the pesky fly population. In the winter, it actually is an insulator. If you are saddling up for a ride, make sure the saddle area is brushed of any debris that might rub under the saddle. One thing we forget is that as herd animal, horses were prey to larger animals, especially pack animals. Rolling in the mud actually camouflages their natural scent, which would have been desirable if there were predators near.

My horse Max runs the kids outta the mud puddle so he can get in there and splash and roll. I have pictures of it and I laughed my butt off at him. He got mud everywhere!! I bet he played for 30 minutes. I have never had a horse love the water and mud like he does! They must be kindered spirits!

They roll in the mud to cool down it also prevents them from getting bit by as many flies they can't get through the mud. He probably does it for those reasons

Yes, we have one of those. Unfortunately she also refuses to wear a rug in winter and comes in from the field looking as if she has been armor plated. It takes ages to get her looking respectable again and by the time she is everyone around her is covered in dirt !
I have taken to squirting her with Mud-Away to make life a little easier.

Grays! It's like they can't stand to be that conspicuous. Clean them up and they are off looking for something to camouflage themselves with. Our Arab grays were both like that, Shama and Medina would always want to be in the mud. Juba is bay and only rolls if she's itchy, same with Katy.

Nickie loves to dive in the dirt when he's sweaty from being turned out and run around, effectively creating mud and forcing me to give him a bath.

I don't have my own horse but the one horse I rode decided to roll just after I'd washed him and to make things worse he was a grey so I had to wash him all over again.
