I was not bashing shanked bits or different mouth pieces, I may not have put my post together in way to get my point across but I did add to it, hopefully those who took it as me bashing them for using a shanked bit can now understand what I was trying to say. I too use shanked bits and snaffles, depending on level of training, the job at hand, etc. etc. And you are absolutely correct... ANY BIT is only as harsh as the riders hands.

I think it is good for you to post things that are correct!!! Then the rest of us learn!!!!! I learned something from your question & asked you a question if you would please answer. I am on here to learn new things from a very few people, & you are one of them that I do listen to. & I am on here to give what I know to people to try to help. Even on somethings I will get thumbs down & I have done it & it works!!! LOL But if people don't what to take it, then leave it!!!! So good for you to point this stuff out!!!

I just went back to read your last post and I found it very helpful. I own two horses but am ALWAYS looking to learn anything I can, especially with bits. I ride in a snaffle on my one horse and feel better after reading your post. I now feel pretty secure that it is being used properly. However, my other horse I use western (actually it is my sisters horse I will be perfectly honest, I don't know much about western) and have a chain under her muzzle. I am thinking about removing it as it seems completely unnecessary, but I will continue my research! Thanks for the help!

I always look forward to your postings, and find them very informative, and if one reads the whole posting, in context, you make things very clear, and are quick to give additional info if needed. I was put off by this site because of some of the "snarky" responses until I ran across you and a few of the others that seemed like real folks, instead of the Club of One-up-man-ship.

I did not take it as bashing but informing. Some people can get so uppity and will take anything out of context so they can talk negatively to someone.
Hey at least you arent posting about Howrse but about a real issue with horse owners!

I think people imediately just jump to the defensive side with out really reading.
It was very obvious to me what you were trying to say.
Don't let it bother you!
I must say the quick to attack type people are the reason I don't like to post questions though.
I think you have big enough support group not to worry about what some think or feel.

I got it - I have tried shanked bits but the leverage is all wrong for my horse - turned out that was part of the problem !

You were quite clear in what you was trying to say but some people just don't get it and see everything as a personal attack. No worries!
