Mine do it too. I also spent a fair bit of money putting up a nice barn for them to get out of the weather, so what do they do? They just go stand in the rain anyway, look up at the house with these mocking looks as if to say..."Money well spent, huh mom??" They are all boogers.

Many mammals will choose to stand/lie in the sun because the sun helps their skin and fur to produce vitamins. If you notice cats and dogs also lie in the sun all the time too.

I know a horse who does that, I have never been able to figure out why. It might be that it's just as hot in their stalls and there's the possibility of a breeze hitting them if they stand outside.

ours do it too. my thoughts are similar to yours. i think it has something to do with flies. they don't seem to bother them as bad if they're in the sun. we spent $$$ putting up a barn and several shelters in the field, they rarely use them. it can be pouring out..thunder and lightening...and they'll still be standing in the middle of the field.

Ours didn't, some would stand inside whenever they got the chance and others would go out if it was raining cats and dogs.

flies can be one reason, but I would opt for the fact that nature is telling them to get more vitamins from the sun that they might not be getting from their feed...
