Mr. Uri Avnery, an Israeli scholar and peace activist and once a Knesset member, Mr. Avnery first corrects the verse number which the pope quoted and then says, “The treatment of other religions by Islam must be judged by a simple test: how did the Muslim rulers behave for more than a thousand years when they had the power to ‘spread the faith by the sword’?” For many centuries, he says, the Muslims ruled Greece. “Did the Greeks become Muslims? Did anyone try to Islamize them? On the contrary Christian Greeks held the highest positions in the Ottoman administration. The Bulgarians, Serbs, Romanians, Hungarians and other European nations lived at one time or another under Ottoman rule and clung to their Christian faith. Nobody compelled them to become Muslims and all of them remained devoutly Christians”.
the majority had remained Christian in spite of 400 years of Muslim rule. Then “in the name of gentle Jesus”, he says, the Crusaders “massacred its Muslim and Jewish inhabitants”.

The Dow Jones industrial average topped its record-high close this morning, reaching a milestone in Wall Street's recovery from nearly seven years of corporate upheaval, economic recession and the impact of terrorism. The high close was 11,722.98 set on Jan. 14, 2000. Shortly after the index of 30 blue chip stocks surpassed its record, stocks fell back to trade little changed amid a dearth of news that could motivate investors.

"These numbers sometimes tend to act as magnets and the market it sometimes pulled up toward it," said Russ Koesterich, senior portfolio manager at Barclays Global Investments in San Francisco.

In late morning, the Dow was up just 1.92, or 0.02 percent, at 11,691.16. It has yet to reach its all-time trading high of 11,750.28, also reached Jan. 14, 2000.

New York banned smoking in public places, and is considering banning restaurants from using/serving trans fats.

For the public good, what should they ban next?

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20060928/sc_nm/china_fusion_dc_1

I say, good luck to them. If they can shuck off their oil dependency it can only do us good as well. But how would that feel....China selling fusion technology to the US and Europe...?! Would that be the tipping point where we realise that they have overtaken us?

(Side note: I am well aware that in the field of human rights they still have a long way to go....)

UK Prime Minister Tony Blair - the man who dragged the country kicking and screaming into the War on Terror, is looking at his last year in government. It's major news here in the UK, but I wondered if anyone outside the country could actually be bothered to give a rat's? Fellow Brits, feel free to answer too!

So now, not only do the American and British people think Bush was wrong to go to war, but the US Intelligence Community says it's encouraging terrorists. Is Bush just putting his fingers in his ears and singing to himself? What possible reasons for the continuation of the war now exist, other than the classic "I think it's a mistake" line that he gave at his press conference?

"Uncle Sam"--Will he Be Pointing that Finger Again?
Will the U.S. soon need to activate Selective Service System plans for a military draft if open hostilities break out with Iran and Syria?Reports surfacing about Army troops & Marines experiencing significant post-traumatic stress disorder & other psychological & emotional difficulties being sent back to Iraq for repeated tours of combat duty. So many US troops have been killed. Thousands more have been wounded so severely they are unable to return to duty.
According to reports, many young men and women do not wish to join the Army at this time. Military service can include many positive experiences: Fellowship, honor, respect, courage, teamwork, duty to country, learning about people from other backgrounds, sacrifice etrc. but there is a dark side to military life. The killing and destroying. It can bring out the worst in i people. It can be dehumanizing. It can lead to many negative results.

Who wants to go?

A man became a convicted sexual predator for molesting a child based on the child’s testimony. He was sentenced to 40 years in prison. After 8 years of being beaten, raped, tormented, ostracized… he was finally proven INNOCENT based not only on DNA, but the child told the police AFTER the DNA came out that her parents told her to blame that man. Apparently, the father had raped the child (proven by DNA) and the mother didn’t want the father to get into trouble so they wanted to blame a patsy. BASED solely on the child’s testimony and the fact the offender didn’t have an alibi is what convicted him. Now you tell me… is this right. You can say it will be all right now that the truth is out, but…
1)A mans life is DESTROYED
2)No one will hire the man because he is was “hardened”
3)It doesn’t matter how innocent he is, the community will (at least in the back of their mind) think of him as a child molester.
Where is the justice in this? This just makes me PUKE.

And if she is planning to continue Steve's work. And if there's any other information that people need to know.

Also, what do you think about the lack of it in the rest of the world?

2006-09-28 01:53:44 · 6 answers · asked by mandie16 2

I think this is the greatest question of our times, and palyers on the highest levels of political, military, and corporate power are STILL
mulling over the answer.
Here is my answer. We are treating Red China as a de facto
friend. How could it be otherwise, as we outsource a great bulk
of our manufacturing sector, with all the technology transfer that
goes with it, and have been building up a trading deficit with the country that is exponentially growing, and is the largest of any country in the world. On the other end, we entrust the Red
Chinese to expeditiously send back dollars earned in the proper
pockets of US government debt, such as t-bills and other Fed
notes, that keep the circular process churning.
So, we must be considering China, by consensus, a friend,
for, if it is, or will be, our enemy, I would imagine the leverage
Red China would have on our economic system would be quite crushing, to say the least.

SO, is Red China a friend, enemy, or a little of both?

I went into our local Tesco shop today and was shocked to see that they are selling Christmas stuff already.
I think this is wrong because there are months to go and they are just trying to be the first.
Do any of you think this is wrong too??
