Mr. Uri Avnery, an Israeli scholar and peace activist and once a Knesset member, Mr. Avnery first corrects the verse number which the pope quoted and then says, “The treatment of other religions by Islam must be judged by a simple test: how did the Muslim rulers behave for more than a thousand years when they had the power to ‘spread the faith by the sword’?” For many centuries, he says, the Muslims ruled Greece. “Did the Greeks become Muslims? Did anyone try to Islamize them? On the contrary Christian Greeks held the highest positions in the Ottoman administration. The Bulgarians, Serbs, Romanians, Hungarians and other European nations lived at one time or another under Ottoman rule and clung to their Christian faith. Nobody compelled them to become Muslims and all of them remained devoutly Christians”.
the majority had remained Christian in spite of 400 years of Muslim rule. Then “in the name of gentle Jesus”, he says, the Crusaders “massacred its Muslim and Jewish inhabitants”.

I'm grateful to the Muslims of the Past. For example during the last Crusades the Christians that captured Jerusalem slaughtered all sorts of civilians upon their capture of the Holy City. Saladin the Muslim warrior later recaptured Jerusalem and allow any civilian of any faith to peacefully remain in Jerusalem. Quite a human act of magnanimity.

The concern now is more recent behavior of contemporary Muslim gov'ts. The Taliban in Afghanistan was NOT know for their tolerance of other faiths, even other sects of Islam. Their cruelty to women was/is legendary.

The social / religous customs in present Saudi Arabia would be considered criminal according to Western standards. And they are the moderate Muslims! No religous tolerance, no free speech on religous and political issues. The criminal justice system would be centuries behind the West.

Yes there are and were many peacful Muslims. Are they the ones likely to be leading the charge in a newly Muslim nation? Probably the most extreme and "orthodox" of Muslims would be the most motivated to try to conquer a Western country and return it to the caliphate.

Yah but the Ottomans insisted on being the rulers, or else. Right??? what does that mean???

Osmun founder of the Ottomans from wikipedia:
Ottoman historians often dwell on the prophetic significance of his name, which means "bone-breaker", signifying the powerful energy with which he and his appeared to show in the following centuries of conquest. “Osman” means the “Bone-breaker.” It is also the name given to a large species of vulture, commonly called the royal vulture, which is considered the emblem of sovereignty and warlike power in the East, comparable to the eagle in the nations of the West.

Sounds like a real nice quy. I sure would want to work for him..... reading further...

long and fierce struggle between the Osman and Karamanogullari princes for the ascendency, commenced in Osman’s lifetime and was protracted during the reigns of many of his successors. Osman himself had gained some advantages over his Karamanli rival; but the weak and wealthy possessions of the Byzantine Emperor in the north-east of Asia Minor were more tempting marks for his ambition than the Karamanoglu plains, and it was over Greek cities and armies that the triumphs of the last twenty-six years of Osman’s life were achieved.

.....hmmm Byzantine Empire. Wasn't that the Empire that the pope was talking about?

triumphs was that due to his charisma?

and more....
Not all of Osman’s counselors agreed with Osman's path of conquest. Osman silenced all remonstrance and quelled all risk of dissension and mutiny by an act of prompt ferocity, which shows that the great ancestor of the Ottoman Sultans had a full share of the ruthless cruelty that has been the dark characteristic of the Turkish Royal House....

yah, I am sure that everyone who worked for him was real, real happy.

I was wondering. How did the Ottoman come to rule over all these lands if not by the sword?
