"Uncle Sam"--Will he Be Pointing that Finger Again?
Will the U.S. soon need to activate Selective Service System plans for a military draft if open hostilities break out with Iran and Syria?Reports surfacing about Army troops & Marines experiencing significant post-traumatic stress disorder & other psychological & emotional difficulties being sent back to Iraq for repeated tours of combat duty. So many US troops have been killed. Thousands more have been wounded so severely they are unable to return to duty.
According to reports, many young men and women do not wish to join the Army at this time. Military service can include many positive experiences: Fellowship, honor, respect, courage, teamwork, duty to country, learning about people from other backgrounds, sacrifice etrc. but there is a dark side to military life. The killing and destroying. It can bring out the worst in i people. It can be dehumanizing. It can lead to many negative results.

Who wants to go?

Most conservatives won't, because they think like Rush Limbaugh and Dick Chaney 'I am above being in the military". Sean Hannity, he would never serve. Most Conservative journalists have never served (what's the matter Sean, afraid your shoes might get dirt on them). We expect liberals to evade the draft, but conservatives always have the best excuses, like a boil on the butt or something like that. It really does not matter if there is a draft. The same people will get out of it, as before, but will be willing to send other peoples sons to risk their lives.

Yes. I think there will be. Why? The military might have met all of it's recruitment goals but if I'm not not mistaken those recruitment goals had been lowered so they wouldn't look bad for not meeting them. Sooner or later they are going to have to send more troops into Iraq. Afghanistan is falling back to where it was before the taliban was ousted originally. Some in the administration think military action should be taken against Iran. Some people think think those people will prevail. Anyway, one more hiccup in the world requiring American military intervention and I don't thing they'll have a choice but to bring back the draft.

Well, if it happens, it happens, though I doubt a draft is inevitable
for the very fact that the rapid strike capacity of the modern military obviates any need for massive manpower. Just like your local factory where 10 people running knobs today do the work
of 300 in 1965.
Only in the past, when men were sent as essentially human
baggage and ballast, was sheer manpower a factor. Now, its all
about machines, drones, and assorted high tech marvels,
not drafting massive bodies. So, no, a draft won't happen,
ever..........you are right that the tours are beginning to get
wearying, but the military will deal it with the volunteer force they have, even if it means winding it down a bit.....a draft would be very bad PR right now, and, as I said, the jist of the future is in rapid deployment anyway

Each branch of the Armed Forces is meeting current recruitment goals. Barring some unforeseen catastrophes there will be no draft.

If a large military/economic country like China were to launch an attack, maybe. That doesn't seem likely

You can find something else to worry about

No commander wants conscripts. The US learned it's lessons on that issue during Viet Nam and they won't change the policy unless an all out war that exceeds the current number of forces occurs.

And contrary to popular fiction, the US has more than sufficient forces to handle any military conflict. The choice to call up reserve units was stupid and unnecessary.

Gosh I certainly hope not, I dont' think it is fair to draft anyone only because many people have one or just 2 kids. I have only 2 boys and if they draft one of them and they get killed I am left with one child left; and who's to say something might not happen to my other son like a life threatening disease or god forsakes some kind of accident that kills him, then I am left with no children. I don't agree with the Draft and never will.

I already served so I won't be going unless they asked me to. I think there should be a draft to protect our borders.
