Why are we fighting for freedom "over there" when there is legislation over here that's stripping our freedoms?

i caught a story on npr over the weekend about a man who was forced to apologize publicly after using the phrase "tar baby" in a speech. he was referring to some sort of legal mix up that might have rendered many divorces legally not recognized. i did not get the very beginning of the story, so i'm sure about the details, but i heard the tar baby part. he said to start sorting out the divorces in question, and trying to decide which were valid and which weren't would gain them a real tar baby, referring to the well-known story of br'er rabbit, in which a baby fashioned of tar was placed into some brambles for the purpose of first luring and them trapping another character in the brambles. you see, the more the character tried to release the tar baby from the brambles, the stickier and more entangled he'd become. it is obvious that this man was referring to a sticky situation which just gets worse the more one tries to handle it. yet he was forced into a public apology because...

How many people actually died and survived? How many were pulled out of those buildings like a few? What do you think of the corageous people who took down Flight 193 and crashed into a field. I would have done something too! What would you do if you were in those planes? I know it's a touchy subject... I apologize.

The Iraqis are looking at a Draft OIl Bill,"for the investment of the most important national resource for all Iraqis."

'Passage of the oil law, which seeks a fair distribution of revenues among all Iraq's sectarian and ethnic groups, has become a major issue for the United States, which had initially counted on financing Iraq's post-invasion construction with oil revenues.'

Oh dear, the Iraqis want to keep all their oil for the Iraqi people. So tell me, why did we (Britain and America) spend so much money and so many heroic lives if there was no profit in it? And don't give me the old chestnut of 'regime change' because that just doesn't wash. If we were really concerned, why have we done nothing in Darfur, or started stamping all over Mugabe's despotic regime, etc.,etc.?

So, let them pass their oil bill and get out of there! With their own oil and their own money they can sort themselves out, and our boys won't be targets for terrorists.

was quite shocking and disturbing. Why do cons and repugs feel the need to spread false rumors and lies if they really think they have The Truth? And why do they feel the need to act like Brownshirts to anyone who disagrees with them? I've never seen any comparable behavior in the left except possibly in reaction to Klan rallies, and those are--well--Klan rallies.

I was reading somewhere that sooner than later, terrorists will have access to fairly refined nuclear weapons (originating from eastern Europe or the disintegration of Pakistan). If terrorists do manage a nuclear strike within the US, what would be the US reaction? Remember, terrorists, unlike nation states are hard to identify & strike back at. It is like fighting an invisible enemy with no concrete achievable goals.

Both are/were tyrants. The US/Brits went all out to for Sadam.
Meanwhile, Mugabwe of Zimbabwe ploughs on with his killing of anyone that gets in his way. But the Western world does nothing about the starving people - especially children. They rattle sabres, and talk about embargo's and the like. This just puts pressure on the citizens of the country. But their heart is not in doing anything about it.
I know what the popular answer will be, but what do you think is the difference?

[The most important part of the Mohammed story is yet to make the headlines. Despite having held and tortured hundreds of detainees for years in Gitmo, and we don’t know how many more in secret prisons around the world, the US government has come up with only 14 "high value detainees."

In other words, the government has nothing on 99 percent of the detainees who allegedly are so dangerous and wicked that they must be kept in detention without charges, access to attorneys and contact with families.

And little wonder. The vast majority of detainees, alleged "enemy combatants," are not terrorists captured by the CIA and brave US troops. They are hapless persons who happened to be outside their tribal or home territories and were kidnapped by criminal gangs or war lords who profited greatly at the expense of the naive Americans who offered bounties for "terrorists." . . .]
