Our lawn is a disaster. We have about an inch of good soil and then under that it's all clay. So as soon as we get a couple sunny days and no rain, the whole lawn dies.. It's really embarrassing. This has been happening every year. I've tried expensive lawn seed that's supposed to be drought resistant, and it dies just as fast and regular lawn seed.

I've heard you can mix lime with clay to make good soil. Is this true? What's the procedure for doing this? Should I use a tiller and just mix the lime and clay all together?

Dad's wife thinks they are called 'mall roses' or something like that. She has never pruned the bush or taken special care of it, and it continues to bloom like crazy year after year. The flowers almost look like daisies, not at all like a rose looks. Can anyone tell me what these are?

It's a few different varieties, including Romaine and Boston.
Could it be too much sun? The soil maybe?

There is a 5 foot wall along the side of my house. It creates an ally that gets a lot of sunlight, but the sunlight is not direct. It is reflected off of the wall, but it the ally is very bright. There only about 2 hours of direct overhead sunligh it receives. What would be a good plants for this location. I like ferns and roses, but would like any suggestions. Thanks!

I would like to plant swop especially any streptocarpus cuttings material or african violets cuttings materials.
Also I will give a home to plants or shrubs you don't want rather than see them go to the tip.
I'm a plantaholic have not really got room for the ones I already have but that has never stopped me.

i have irresponsible people in the neigborhood who let their dogs urinate in my front yard. I am tired of constantly planting grass seed and having a dead lawn because of other people. i have nothing against dogs but dont own one myself. I have not been able to catch the culprit. is there any way to stop this. i have tried store bought dog repellents but they dont work. any one have a solution besides putting an electric barbwire fence in front of a townhouse.

I saw this in an old issue of Better Homes & Gardens while waiting for the doctor. The best way that I can describe it, is that it looked like a brown stick that branched out and grew very small, yellow flowers. I thought it was beautiful, and I want to have it painted in my room, but I need to find a picture of it in order to do so. If it helps at all, a common theme in this room was Asian decor and Asian flowers. Please help! Thanks so much.

I have a small fish pond in my backyard. In it I have one Water Lily that is doing great (got my first bloom this week!!), some Water Lettuce, and a bunch of Water Hyacinths. The Hyacinths seem to be doing well, I started out with three in the spring and now there are more than four times that amount. I am anxiously waiting for them to bloom, but I don't see any signs of buds, they just keep multiplying. Can anyone give me an idea of when they will bloom, if they will bloom, or anything I can do to make them bloom?? Thanks!

Here is a list of seeds I have:
-Larkspur
-Lupins
-Stocks (ten weeks dwarf)
-Penstemon
-Snapdragon
-Salvia
Will these seeds survive over the winter? On most of them the expiry date is December 2008, or December 2009. How do I care for them? When do I plant most of them in the spring, should I start in doors? Which are perannuals and which are annuals? I live in Ontario, Zone 5. What else? I also have 35 gladioli bulbs. I just planted them in a pot, they probably won't bloom this year, i just planted them because i have to take them out in october because they could die over winter outside. How do I care for these too? All these stocks are going to planted in a border, which will probably be pretty nice, and full. And one last thing, I have a perannial Aubeitia, it says I was supposed to plant it inside in April, but I can't do it next year because the expiry date is December 2007. Should I plant them now? Will the bloom next year? Thanks!
