as the flower stem grows the petals would fall off and now it is a single stem standing straight up

Unfortunatly I did not take a picture when it was blooming and now all that is left is a single stalk about 4' high. It starts flowering when it's about a foot from the base and the flowers are a bright red at the top of the growing stem and lighter down the stalk but the flowers fall off so that at any given time there is only about 6" or so of actual flower the older petals are almost white and they seem to be tear dropped shaped. I just got it last year so I had never seen one flower before but now that I have one the only ones I've seen are the regular Yucca with multiple flowering branches.

Might be the Yucca baccata
Common Name: Banana Yucca

"Clumping form, sharp tipped leaves can be blue-green to yellow-green in color. Curling fibers along edges add to the dramatic look. Blooms of bream and rusty red coloring are followed by banana-like fruit. Slow grower, great for desert yards."
