I have two kids, and every time they go out to play, no matter how much bug repelent we put on them, they still get a million bites. How can I reduce the number of mosquitoes or biting bugs in the yard? I already removed everything that had standing water.

I am really into permaculture and what to make the most of my back yard. I have a large shed that makes a shade area behind it of up to two metres wide. Any idea of what veg/herb/fruit tree will best suit, or any ideas on how to reflect light into this spot from the facing fence? (the grass grows really well here!)
I also have a 1 m wide area down the side of the shed that is also in 100% shade I wouldnt mind using up if anyone can think of something? Cheers

Do you honestly feel that it takes 'something' special within a person to grow several varieties of plants successfully?
Or is it basically just simply planting, watering properly ect?

I'll be honest, my gardens always come out pretty great.
However it seems to me it's just common sense, lol--planting, upkeeping w/watering, ect.
Do you have any comparisons contrary?
Or any wonderful stories w/phenomenal gardening that's particuliar unusual please?
thank you! just VERY curious :o)

I live in SW Oklahoma and it has been raining almost everyday for the past 3 months and rain totals are close to 1/2 to 1" of water per day. the temps are only in the low 80's. My problem is my garden looks like hell, the plant's seem to stand in water most of the day, no sun to speak of, the garden is very well planned out in a large raised bed, with good drainage in normal years, and well balanced soil, this place is like the desert most years, I guess my question is would you consider this to be a total loss and just move on or should i try to hang in there, and for how long. ??

Thank you for your time

How long do roses and bloom, and when? I have a pink kind of rose bush, that looks something like this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Rose_zepherine_drouhin_img_1838.jpg . And I have about 10 rose bushes like this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosa_arkansana , but they are not blooming yet, they will next year. How long will these roses bloom, if i cut off the dead blooms and water/fertilize it regularly. What are some other types of roses that has blooms that last for a long time in summer? Tx in advance.

I have some old Azalea in my yard that were beautiful when we moved in 6 years ago. Then last summer one by one they started to die off. Usually a branch will die here and there on the shrub. The branch will have very small leaves on it and then it will just die out. I sprinkle Siven (sp) Dust on them once a month for the past 2 years after I had an attack of lacebugs.
I don't have moles or volves in my yard so I am not for sure what is going on. One very large Azalea that I pulled out and threw back in the woods actually had flowers on it after it sat in the woods on top of the soil. So there is still life in them. I scatch the branches with my nail and it's green under the bark just no leaves. Can anyone help me out on this. I have over 75 Azaleas in my gardens and I don't want to loose them. Thank you for any help you all can provide to me on this issue.

The bugs are very small, bright red, jump, bite, seem to be attracted to white or bright colors. The hang around the concrete driveway and seem to be a problem all over the East TN area. They have tiny, hard to see bodies that are thin and long. I would have to say they look like little red jumping lice.

I have a few cherry trees in my yard at my new house, and I know that it is cherry season, but my cherries are so tiny, and a little bitter. The seller of the house said that it was an edible cherry tree! How do cherries get bigger?

I just snipped my garlic tops (you know the curly ones) from my veggie garden so the bulbs can grow better, and I know you can use the tops, but do I have to use the tops right away or how do I store them? I have a camping trip coming up and there will be lots of people July 6, we are thinking of having activities for the kids with these, will they last that long?

I am new at gardening, this is only my second year. Last year a flood destroyed the whole yard in mid july, in the begining of this season I was fighting with the groundhogs and bunnies and now the bugs! They are eating all of my chinese cabbage and lettuce. What can I do? I don't want to use chemicals on my food but does anything else actually work? I have a good garden book that has some homemade recipes but these didn't seem to have much effect. Any sugestions would be very appreciated! Thanks

The previous owner of my house had a tractor and left very large tire ruts in the soil (clay). I'm trying to break the clay down to plant some vegetables but I can't break the clay down. I've rented a Honda tiller, but I think the tines are not working well and wont really dig into the ground. Is there any way to reclaim this soil? It seems that there is a difference between cultivators and tillers...maybe I have the wrong one?

Please offer any advice...right now the only thing growing is the blisters on my hands from working with this tiller.
