My mother was was talking about gardening and I noticed she said "wheel barrow" and I said it's BARREL..... so to prove myself right I decided to ask here... so what is it?

The Truth is - According to the way it works - The Wheel Barrow was first invented in the country of China centuries ago, And in those days they did called it Wheel Barrel because the first one was a combination of an actual barrel with wheels. That's how it was originally named "Wheel Barrel" Even today the people of China still call it by that name. But in America - People were somehow so poorly conditioned to calling it Wheel Barrow for so many years, They've long forgotten or don't even realize "Wheel Barrel" is the original name. In America - We call it Wheel Barrow. In China - They call it Wheel Barrel. Either way it's the same. Just like America spells Gray with an A, And England Spells Grey with an E. Same word and meaning, but different spelling. England has been a country alot longer than America - Therefore - England has the original. Keep in mind - There's alot of words in America that is poorly mis-represented wether anybody realizes it or not.

In North America it's 'wheelbarrow'. So many words and phrases are now pronounced incorrectly. Like "I could care less". My response would be to go ahead and care less then! But the actual phrase is "I couldn't care less"............as in "I care as little about this as I possibly could."
And, in the US, 'whalla'........or however that is spelled! It is in fact a French word, 'voila', and it means 'there you go', 'that's it', 'there it is', that sort of thing.

It's just like the sport of Soccer. Most foreign countries call it "Futbol" (Football) But America is the only country in the world that calls it "Soccer"

It does make sense to say wheel barrel. However, slang has had its swarm into vocabulary and I really think it doesn't matter what you call something as long it is in the limits
