Garden & Landscape - June 2007

I just planted a garden in my backyard, I live in northern california in the valley & the area gets full sun.

I planted rasberries on a mound in one corner, I planted 3 watermelon plants in one mound then another mound with 2 Ambrosia melon plants, then 3 raised rows with corn, peas, and peppers.

My questions are thease:
IS there anything SPECIAL I have to do to thease plants?
( Besides water and pick weeds)
Do you think they will produce fruit. vegtables this season?
Because I dont know if I planted them too late?
The area is 25 feet by 10 feet, do you think this is enough room?
Any suggestions and hints are appreciated, this is my first time growing something that produces fruit or vegtables :)

I have a flower bed right outside my window. Every night a cricket camps out there and "chirps" all nite. It is surprisingly load and keeps me awake. When I go out there (at 3am!) to find it and put it out of my misery, it shuts up and I cant find it. So I cant kill it b/c I cant find it. Then as soon as I go inside and lay my head down...25 seconds later here goes the chirping again. It is very, very annoying.

What can I do to stop this? Is there some treatment I can put in my flower bed that wont kill my plants but will either kill crickets or prevent them from choosing *THAT* particular location to loudly announce their stupid mating call all nite? Thank you in advance!

There is lots of new growth and shoots on my orchid. What puzzles me is that there are clumps of what looks like new roots growing out of them at points 3" and 6" up the sides of the old stalks. Sometimes the roots are in the same location of a new shoot that has started. Should I cut the stalks and re-plant the part with the new roots? Is this an indication that I need to re-pot the orchid? The orchid sure seems to be happy because I have never had one grow so vigorously, so it is hard to think about disturbing it now. What should I do, if anything?

If you go to a garden centre and buy a tomato plant, the soil has these little white balls in it. What is it? I've gotten conflicting information whenever I've asked someone. One person told me it was styrofoam, another said it was gypsum.

When I was a kid I'd always heard you could put a penny in the ground, but I just googled it and found nothing.
Can anyone tell me the easiest way, or have you ever had success with a penny?
Thank you.
