I have a flower bed right outside my window. Every night a cricket camps out there and "chirps" all nite. It is surprisingly load and keeps me awake. When I go out there (at 3am!) to find it and put it out of my misery, it shuts up and I cant find it. So I cant kill it b/c I cant find it. Then as soon as I go inside and lay my head down...25 seconds later here goes the chirping again. It is very, very annoying.

What can I do to stop this? Is there some treatment I can put in my flower bed that wont kill my plants but will either kill crickets or prevent them from choosing *THAT* particular location to loudly announce their stupid mating call all nite? Thank you in advance!

The more you think about it, the more it will annoy you and the more you'll stay awake. Plus if you expect to be awaken by the cricket, then things will get worse!
Ignoring the noise is the key!
Good luck!

Ah, I hate crickets. They're fine far away, but up close, not so much.

I'm sure you go could go to Home Depot or something and pick out any one of a number of insecticides that will kill crickets, but it doesn't seem like you have that kind of time. It sounds like at 3am you want him gone NOW, rather than waiting for a few days or a week for a poison to take effect.

For quick action I'm thinking something like ECO Pco AR-X, which is organic. Google that and you'll find it on Amazon and bunch of other places. Or ... you can make your own organic spray repellent if you've got the time and inclination. :D

Garlic Oil Spray

To make: Combine 3 ounces of minced garlic cloves with 1 ounce of mineral oil. Let soak for 24 hours or longer. Strain.
Next mix 1 teaspoon of fish emulsion with 16 ounces of water. Add 1 tablespoon of castile soap to this.
Now slowly combine the fish emulsion water with the garlic oil. Kept in a sealed glass container this mixture will stay viable for several months. To use: Mix 2 tablespoons of garlic oil with 1 pint of water and spray. (courtesy of http://www.ghorganics.com/page12.html)

I found this info online. I hope it helps so you can sleep!

http://cals.arizona.edu/urbanipm/insects/cricketmanagement.html

Apply Diatomaceous Earth (DE) between walls and other places where crickets hide during the day as well as to areas through which crickets walk. This abrasive, fine, white powder is actually tiny sharp fossil shells that will gradually wear through the cricket's outer shell, causing it to dehydrate and die. Wear a dust mask during application to prevent inhaling which could lead to respiratory problems.

Biological Strategies
Encourage natural predators: Many cats prey on crickets and keep indoor populations down. Keep cricket numbers down outdoors by encouraging natural enemies like lizards, birds, and harmless spiders.

Chemical Strategies
Apply a crack and crevice treatment: Boric acid or other pesticide applied to cracks and holes will kill crickets that pass through the barrier.

Hi princeidoc!!

Well, an improvised way to keep those nasty crickets away is by installing a sprinkler that squirts in those times where it comes to disrupt your sleep. Also mow the lawn often. It would soon leave because of lack of grass or well... let's not get into the second scenario...

Hope that helped...!

I have a similar problem...but instead of crickets chirping, its bats squeaking on the other side of the attic door that is in our bedroom...you wanna talk about being kept up? Holy Moly!!!

I'd prefer the crickets!! LOL

Dunno what to tell ya, Doc...perhaps running a fan for some white noise might help?

**Edit** I also have a baby monitor that I need to be able to hear. I run the a/c unit in our window and if its cooler out, I just run the fan on the Unit and it helps drown out the bat noise, and I just crank up the volume on the monitor.

Good luck!

My suggestions would include ear plugs and/or a white noise generator -- or a light near the site that might make it stop chirping. For a few laughs -- and to show you that you might not be alone with this problem, try this link:

Same problem here.. and they start at exactly 8pm every single night... they would only stop after a long chirping noise of 30-40mins.. and happens 2x the most every night... :(

oh, I can sympathize!

I would spread boric acid all around the area outside your window. It wont' hurt the plants.

Good luck!

You could wear ear plugs, then both are happy.
