Befor 1940 began the deluge of synthetic pesticides crude extracts from plants where well known to work. Plant extracts such as pyrethrum from Chrysanthemum cinerariefolium, nicotine from Nicotiana glauca, and rotenone from a tropical leguminous plant were among the first compounds used to control insects of agricultural importance.
Pyrethrum as an insecticide dates back to Persia, circa 400 B.C. but in Europe not until a merchant form the Caucasus brought it in the early 19th century.
There are reports, as early as the 17th century, of Indians fishing using rotenone-containing plants. They used it due to its toxic effect on the fish. Teixeira JR, Lapa AJ, Souccar C, Valle JR 1984. Timbós: ichthyotoxic plants used by Brazilian Indians.
Time line of insect treatments begins with the Sumerians using sulfur as an insecticide about 2500BC. Sulfur is readily obtained from garlic.
