I suffer from depression and have for years. My mother suffered all her life, my sister also suffers as well as my son who is 19. They all have been on medication and it has helped them enormously. My son's dr. at the time was a pediatrician and prescribled his meds. I really need some help and don't have a Dr. of my own. I really don't want to advertise to the family that I am suffering with these issues. What kind of Dr. is best for this?

I know this question seems strange, but I'm curious as to why studies show that weight gain is very common when someone is on an anti-depressant, even if their appetite, food intake, and activity level remains the same...

I appreciate the answers to my previous question, and am well aware that this will require medical intervention. One complication is that I have to make a 7-hour drive in 3 days. There's no one else who can drive me, and it can't be delayed. Any short-term tips to help me get through this?

From personal experience, if you go into a therapists office and explain to them your well-reasoned decision for not wanting to take psychiatric medication, they will refuse to treat you. 9/10. The other one will find some other reason.
I believe that they prescribe medication initially to mask and supress the symptoms, so that they do not have to work hard at fixing the problem. However, the problem is still there, and now you have a person is chemically dependant on a medication they didn't need to begin with, if the person they were paying actually did their job!

agree or disagree?

I have heard that they have proven that good talk therapy is more effective than psychiatric medications in treating patients. They say that it 1) helps the body produce the lacking enzymes 2) makes relapse less likely due to the formation of new coping mechanisms 3) makes the patient feel "better" because he/she has "gotten it off his/her chest" and has seen that they are not dependant on medication to make themselves functioning adults, and can do it with just a little help.
Do you know where to find research to back this up, or do you have any thoughts on the matter?

Are there any methods or pratices that make one's mental health strong and healthy without connection to any religion? If so, how to practise?

I am on Effexor once a day 150mg. Seems lately everyone has been on my case about my mental health even gotten to the point of threatening me to get a psyhic evaluation or be forced into the hospital for one. I am working with a nurse who comes to my home once a week and have arranged to get help thru the Canadian Mental and Addication Insuite here in Toronto. Seems that isnt good enough. I am right now so down and out all I want is to sleep and sleep more. Nothing I am doing is good. Heck I got a new boyfriend about a month ago., they dont believe me he is my bf., I am always taking my meds but they still count them to see that I am., always told I am not a good enough mom to my girls., and lots more. My bf seems to be the most supportive of me right now and believes me.

Is a person with Borderline Personality Disorder BOUND to self-destruct until she destroys everything she loves? I mean, is that basically a must-have? A doctor told me that i would, and that i would eventually drive the man i love into insanity himself. Please, don't answer with a mean response....

I have anxiety about the stupidest things and I stress out about accomplishing things in my life. I know that I need some sort of solution to my problem and I am not sure if medication is it. O thought trying to work it out on my own would be best, but I am considering otherwise. Can I ask a normal doctor for this prescription?
