Bipolar Disorder I is characterized by major depressive episodes which can last at least 2 weeks followed by either a period of normal functioning or a period of mania, known as a manic episode. However, a manic episode is not required for a diagnosis.
Bipolar Disorder II is characterized by major depressive episodes, also lasting at least 2 weeks, followed by a period of either normalcy or hypomania. With Bipolar II, however, the hypomania is necessary for a diagnosis.
Mania is characterized by increased energy, decreased need for sleep, impulsive behaviors (spending, sex), and racing thoughts.
Hypomania is a "low grade" manic episode with more minor symptoms.
Both Bipolar I and II disorders are classified as mood disorders in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders 4th edition, text revision, publised by the American Psychiatric Association.

bi-polar is a feeling of being so high and so much energy you can go for days and nights without sleeping or either you can be down so low you want do anything. They usually are so ill you don't want to be around them either way unless there on medication. No it's not the same as depression but you can be depressed if your not in the high stage of bi-polar.

No it is not the same as depression. Bipolar Disorder means that you have severe mood swings (highs and lows) When you go on a manic high you can stay up for days on end without any sleep. Just lots of energy. When you are on a manic low it means that you have crashed and are so depressed that you don't even have the energy to hardly get out of bed if you even have the energy to do it. That is the difference between depression and Bipolar Disorder.

Bipolar disorder (previously known as manic depression) is a psychiatric diagnostic category describing a class of mood disorders in which the person experiences depression and/or mania, hypomania, and/or mixed states. Persons suffering from the disorder are considered to be disabled. Cases of bipolar disorder are generally divided into two diagnostic categories, Bipolar I and Bipolar II, with Bipolar I cases generally being regarded as more acute. Left untreated, bipolar disorder can be a severely disabling condition, with a risk of death through suicide.

depression is a symptom of bipolar, the other major symptom is mania, which is the oposite of depression you need to at least have had one episode of mania to be diagnosed as bipolar.
with mania you get fast thoughts, insomnia, anxiety and you could get agitated... etc.
wikipedia explains it very well... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bipolar_disorder
