Dissociative Disorders are a class of mental disorders in the DSM-IV (diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders). Dissociative Disorders include the following:

Dissociative Amnesia - "Selective" forgetting, global, retrograde, anterograde amnesia usually following a trauma or stressful event.

Dissociative Fugue - Basically amnesia with travel. The individual will forget who they are temporarily, travel to a distant location, and start a new identity

Dissociative Identity Disorder - DID used to be called multiple personality disorder. This is characterized by more than one personalities which recurrently take over the person's personality.

Depersonalization Disorder - the individual feels as though they are disconnected from themself and as though they are on the outside looking in.

Basically, dissociative disorders are characterized by dissociation, or a disconnection from the self.

Dissociative Identity Disorder is what used to be known as Multiple Perosnality Disorder. It is when you dissociate or mentally separate from your body in order to escape the horrors that you have been put thorugh. Most people who have DID have been sexually abused but people also dissociate who have been thorugh other types of trauma.

Dissociation occurs on a spectrum just like any other disorder. have left a connection for you. Good luck trying to find your answers.

dissociation has many sides. most often, i would guess, a person experiencing it feels that life is not happening to him or her - they feel as if they're watching it from a distance, or that it's not "real". this is a defense mechanism to prevent them from being hurt by a traumatic event, such as a rape, or watching, or even committing, a murder. there are different forms, though - this is but one. more research (try searching for, "dissociation", at wikipedia.com) might give you a broader understanding.

You have a tendency to stay away from people. Don't drive yourself nuts over it. Go see your doctor or a psychiatrist to see if they can help you.
