Here's a chance for non-doctors to play doctor without killing any patients. Real doctors please don't answer unless it's been a day or so and no one else has.

A patient comes in because he has had a high fever for several days now and yesterday developed a cough. He had asthma as a child, has seasonal allergies, and a mild heart murmur. When you are listening to his heart (there's that murmur) you notice tiny freckle-like bruising on his chest. He raises his hand to scratch his forehead and you spot a bruiselike spot on his palm. When questioned he says it does not hurt and he's not sure what caused it. As you examine his hand you notice a few tiny red lines running down several of his nails. You ask him to take off his shoes and socks and sure enough, there are more of those painless red blotches on his soles. You immediately send him to the hospital for tests for...?

For best answer name the blotches and say what the first two tests will be.

in an area where I had previously suffered a herniated disc (1981, right side, L4-L5). The pain is nowhere near as severe as it was with the herniated disc, but travels all the way down my leg, and has caused a curvature of my spine (to the left) which was not there before. Now this morning, I discovered a large bruise on my right hip near the ball and socket joint. I have not injured my hip in any way that I'm aware of. What could be going on with this? I'm beginning to grow concerned. The opinions of medical professionals are strongly preferred.

Whenever I eat the tiniest food, doesn't matter, my stomach "expands". In detail, the whole stomach and intestine zone just gets bigger and bigger and I look like I'm pregnant! How do I stop this? Is there a name to this "thing"? I am terribly sick of it and all my friends and family say I'm fat, which is sooo not true, because when I wake up in the morning I look super slim, I just wish I can keep that figure the whole day. I even had thoughts of not eating for days in order to keep that figure for several days!

Is there a medical name to what's happening to me?
How can I cure this? Medicines, naturally?

please, please, please!!! I am really embarassed of myself looking like this the whole day :(.

well im 14 and have scoliosis. i have some panic attacks at times but not too often. my head always feels heavy and ill feel like pressure on the back of my head and in ears. i get dizzy a lot and my ears always click (i have symptoms of tmj too), my head sometimes feels like its a baloon floating up and the back of my neck sometimes hurts. im scared to go on stage because i might get dizzy and fall or pass out. when i go to auditrioms and stuff like that ill feel sorta lightheaded . like one time i went to this show and it was really bright i felt weird n off balance like i usually do but once they turned off the lights i felt a little better. (the off balance was gone but the pressure on the back of my head was still there)
so my question is is this tmj, anxiety or something else?
is there any thing i should try to make this stop because its really annoying?
also i have a nuerologist appointment soon so anything that i could suggest as a possibility??
thanks!!!

My colds are usually really bad: sore throat, barely able to speak, really scratchy voice for like a week afterwards with a runny nose and coughing after the worst part has gone away(the sore throat).
They usually only last 2 days or so, but this cold that I have right now, has been here for 4 days now. I really need to get rid of this! What can I do to help get rid of it? Yes, I know, halls... but halls literaly make me ill and I don't know why. There is only one kind I can stand and after it's gone, everything just comes back.
Also, if you know a good way of getting rid of a scratchy voice afterwards, that would help too!

Thanks!

this all started with my bf wanting to record the birth of our baby when it is born. I told him I didnt want a camera on me in the delivery room when I'm going through with that. B4 I got pregnant, he passed a kidney stone & it sounded more like he was birthing a boulder in the bathroom & then I heard him scream! I told him that if I he records the birth of our baby, then I get to stand in the bathroom & record the birth of his next kidney stone(he's passed 5 in the last 8 yrs, so more will come). Is that fair? He said no, because a man passing his stone is a more private experience than a woman giving birth in a hospital. When he was married to his ex-wife, he got their 3 kids on tape I guess, but between then & now had 2 kids w/ 2 different women & didnt get to be there at the birth. I mean, he stands there & pisses out a rock & lets out a yell, then its done, childbirth is much different. Do you thinks it more private then childbirth? you'd have to caputre his penis would you?

Hi All,

This is a conclusion of what I am experiencing :

- blood in my urine ONLY once in the morning when i go to toilet after I woke up

- throughout the day the urine is clear

- Also I have a little ache on my lower back

- I've notice some foul smell on my discharge recently

- I've gone to see the doctor and now I'm on antibiotics for 5 days

- She did a urine test and said I have presence of white blood cells in my urine (which should not be presence at all).

- When I urine, I DO NOT feel any pain at all meaning I can pass urine smoothly.

- I often have to pass urine frequently especially at night (I woke up few times to pass urine) and I like to hold my urine.

- Many years ago, I used to pass urine with pain but the problem was settled after I drank cranberry juice.

My case is different to those mention. I only see blood in my urine in the morning after I woke up. I have frequent urge to urinate everyday. what is the problem?

i get gouty attacks an have become use to them an know how to treat 'em. back home (usa) everytime i got an attack my dr would give me "allopurinol" and some other med and sen me on my way. when i got my first attack in hina my gf went to the pharmacy and told them i had "the gout". she came back with an "otc" called "colchicine tablets". perhaps these are the same medss that my dr back home prescribed but each tab is 10mg. the tabs of the "other stuff" my dr presribed were 50mg. but being these ones (here) are an otc they probably had to make 'em 10mg each.

this last attack was pretty bad. i was popping the colchicine tabs like pez but it seemed to have no affect. and i was drinkin water like a horse and that seemed to worsen the attack. i went to the er and the dr gave me an IV of glucose and an otc called "saridon". which of course were both new treatments to me. he said in severe cases this treatment is needed.

In 2 weeks, I am going to have an endoscopy since I have gerd. They are going to check for inflammations and other structures in the gastro system. I have been on Nexium for around 2 months now, but I still continue to have reflux symptoms (heartburn & regurgitation). If I keep taking Nexium for the 2 weeks the procedure, would it affect the accuracy of the test?

For the past couple of years I've been getting these dizzy spells. I'm not sure how long someone can live with a brain tumor before it becomes obvious, so could it be anything else? When I go into these dizzy spells (usually after i stand up, or start walking) I can smell this weird... well, smell. Kind of like iron? and my vision slowly starts going black from the outside edges inward. I always hear this buzzing when it happens and more than a handful of times I actually have passed out for about 5 seconds. But not always. After I wake up my tongue tingles, but that goes away after a few seconds too. I'm 17 years old and as far as I know healthy. I eat right, I'm a healthy weight. I went to go see my doctor about it but he said it was only my blood pooling and then rushing back? He seemed to brush it off, but I'm still concerned. Normally blood doesn't leave parts of your body completely, right? Could it be anything serious? Does anyone else expirience this?

I had my yearly physical and some microscopic blood showed up in my urine. The doc sent if off for a culture and it came back clean no infection. I had a complete hysterectomy years ago and still have reg exams at the gyn every year with no problems.I have no pain and no fever. I do not drink alcohol or smoke. I do take a hormone and that is about it.

My cholesterol was a tad high but I am not overweight at all. I am over 40 but under 50. I have job that requires me to stand all day most of the time I do not have a problem with that.

I have never had any children and the hysterectomy is the only surgery I have ever had. Today the doc took another urine sample and it still has microscopic blood in it he is going to have it cultured again just to make sure there is no infection.

Any ideas what it could be?

Okay, my son, for the past month, has been coughing up a storm, starting about 30 minutes after going to bed at night. Most nights, this results in him coughing so bad he gags and throws up. He's always had asthma that is triggered by changes in weather, and the weather has not been the same from one day to another.

But someone suggested to him that our son has acid reflux, and we're getting him in to see a pedi GI, but he can't be seen until after the new year.

What are some ways, if this is really acid reflux, that we could help keep it under control until after the beginning of January? Any tips, whether they refer to a change in what he eats, things we can do to ease it, or something OTC that is safe for use in 6-yr-olds would be helpful.

Thanks!
