It's the same thing as a "functioning addict." A functioning alcoholic manages to get to work on time every day, pay their bills, and do everything that society deems as moral. However, I would say that there is no such thing as a functioning alcoholic because the alcoholic kills their liver and and physical body. Also, anyone who needs alcohol to cope with life is not very functional. Eventually, the alcoholism will start to effect their relationships and work NO MATTER WHAT!

Not the person who you go out with on the weekend to party it up with. It's the one that gets up in the morning, has a drink, just to get going. They can drink, go to work, and "function" but when it's down time, they consume themselves with alcohol. If they (you) are drinking daily. Or when you try to not have one you go insane and break down and have one. Some people can go out and not need to have a beer/alcohol. Others cant. Mind you this is my personal experience with someone who is a functional alcoholic and opinion. (and the short version)

"The functioning alcoholic is the alcoholic who can hold down a job, pursue a career or care for children while continuing his or her alcoholism. Some can do these things successfully, but how well do they handle the other functions in living? How do they function in the role of spouse, parent, driver, financial manager and community volunteer? His job or profession isn't his only function in life." quote from Dr Neil Neil Psychologist.
