I have a nervous habit of pulling my hair out. I am determined to stop it. I have not pulled out a hair in 4 days. Is there a time when habits go away? I heard 23 days. is this true or does it depend?

I am in my late 50's and am a cancer survivor...that's good, I know, but I also have an emotional illness and when I get stressed (and that is quite often) my symptoms erupt. I feel stuck and trapped in the mental health system. If it wasn't for the encouragement of my partner, I'd be lost. I never believed I had a mental problem that I need to keep at bay with pills, but when I don't take them, I relapse and go into hospital where I have been committed too many times to count in my life. I cry a lot...am in radiation treatments for my cancer and do not work cause I am subsidized by government...so me and my partner stay at home a lot...24/7. We don't have a car and the only way I feel socially connected at this time is by phone and computer blogging...other than that, I isolate. It is amazing that my relationship has lasted as long as 15 years, but we work at it...coz we are all we have. He is beginning to find work and I will be alone even more. Its 2 complicated 2 ask 4 help

My mum was diagnosed with Alzheimer's when she was 66. she was in a home when she was 67 and completely taken by the disease 6 months later.

She is now in a wheel chair, in a nappy, spoon fed and totally immobile. she doesn't know anyone any more, there is no recognition or spark of life in her eyes and she is in a vegetative state. She has strokes and fits almost every couple of months. Before this she was a strong health woman.

Why then, if she was to become physically ill would the Hospital/doctor take heroic actions to preserve her "life"

Why do they have to do all things necessary to keep her breathing when there is absolutely NO quality of life for her?? Why can't she be allowed to go in peace?

Before you give me the 'god knows best' answer. How do you know that 'God' isn't taking her and the doctors keep bringing her back? Also I am sceptical as to whether there is a god, and if there is then would he want her to suffer?

I loved my mum very much, I lost my dad 14 years ago and my family is disappearing, however I do not feel that is it necessary to keep resuscitating what is left of her, it is time to let her go in peace.

Finally, the other argument I hear is that doctors do not know whether Alzheimer's patients conciousness is trapped in the shell of the sufferer, therefore they say everything that can be done should be. If you were trapped in a completely immobile body, with no speech or way of communicating, Would You want to live???

My Gran had Alzheimer's, My Mum had Alzheimer's so this is of great concern to me and my sister.

What are the medical criteria for a person to be pronounced dead? Not brain dead - real dead.

ONLY DOCTORS OR HEALTH PROFESSIONALS/EXPERTS can answer this question. No guesses, please. This is a SERIOUS question.

I am considering taking Lexapro for anxiety, but I was wondering if anyone has had success using Xanax alone? I am just so nervous about the possible side effects of taking an SSRI.... I was wondering if it might be equally effective to take a low-dose of Xanax daily instead of an SSRI?

I know you guys are not doctors, but I am just looking for other people's personal experiences... Thanks!

I was watching a public program on Meth abuse, and it said the recipe can be found on the web. I was wondering was it over dramatized.

I was recently diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. I lost the ability and feeling in my right side for about a week. I still can't write very well but it's a little better every day. They treated the flare up with steriods for five days through an IV. The day after I was done with the treatment I got so sick I ended up back in the hospital. My skin got red and inflammed and started peeling, my blood pressure and temperature dropped, and my neck and back were so stiff I could barely move. Has anybody else had a negative reaction to the steriod Solumedrol? What should I expect next time?

fianlly one told me it was sciatica, that something was pushing on the nerve. And the Dr I see now agrees that the symtoms I describe sound like sciatica. But when they take an MRI all they come up with is degenerative disc disease. Are they the same thing? Otherwise I am confused.

I saw a program on the discovery health channel about this little girl who had a serious illness that doctors misdiagnosed. But, some time later one of the nurses decided to double check hair head for ticks. And sure enough they found one! They said that ticks do indeed have venom!! And its supposedly similar to spider venom. This case happened in Georgia. The little girl got the tick from her dog. I assume that this may be why Lyme Disease can be mistaken for something else. But once the tick is removed recovery is almost instant. Still however, I think if anyone is bitten by a tick they should be tested for lyme disease just in case. The Atlanta suburbs are not far from me so. I am gonna make sure I protect mysel from these critters!

Imagine a 82 year old person is terminally ill, there is a chance of hospitalisation due to a chest infection, the person might go into shock, NOT due to the terminal illness. On hospitalisation you are asked, if staff should resus or not. What would be your decision?
