Hiccups are gulping sounds caused by involuntary spasms of the diaphragm. The diaphragm is the muscle that separates the chest and abdomen and helps with breathing. Hiccups can be triggered if you eat too much or too fast, consume very hot or cold foods and beverages, or drink carbonated beverages. Other causes include cold showers, entering or leaving a hot or cold room, sudden excitement, and stress.

Home remedies are usually the primary treatment for hiccups, although no one is really sure how well they work. Hiccup home remedies include sneezing, being suddenly frightened, holding your breath, gargling, drinking pineapple juice, drinking water rapidly, sipping ice water, or swallowing dry granulated sugar. These activities may help by altering breathing patterns.

If they last longer than 24 hours, hiccups may be a sign of another condition or injury. You should see your health care provider if you experience prolonged hiccuping.

Hiccups are caused by an involuntary contraction of the diaphram. Sometimes if you swallow sugar (as in a little packet or a tablespoon full), it can stop the hiccups. It doesn't always work but if often does.

Hiccups can be caused by a couple of different things, the most common being a spasm of the diaphragm, there's really not much you can do about it unfortunately. I wish that there was, I get them really bad.

Hold your breath and take ten sips of water. It usually works for me.

They say hiccups are caused by spasms of the diaphragm, which really doesn't explain much. What causes spasms of the diaphragm?

So true! I can understand the confusion, though. Growing up (in the south, where fried chicken and whole milk are on every Sunday brunch table), I was always taught that fish isn't a "real meat" and therefore is acceptable for vegetarians to eat. I've spent so much time trying to convince other people (including pescetarians who call themselves vegetarians) that a fish is living, breathing, and containing flesh/MEAT, that I'm about to pull my hair out. Alas, some people just don't want to know the truth. It's so aggravating to the rest of us, though, who are committed to not eating any animal flesh, to be roped in with flesh-eating people who think they're saving the animals. Ergh.

hiccups can be caused by several things but one sure way to get rid of them is a small amount of vinegar

yup, it's the diaphram. Your brain thinks your diaphram needs more oxygen. So, breathe in slowly & deep into the "lower" part of your lungs, hold & repeat. The sugar, water, scaring, and peanut butter all accomplish this breathing to some degree or another. there's also a rare nerve condition that causes hic-cups as I said, it's rare & you need a specialist to deal with it. good luck.

a lot of things can cause the hiccups, but to rid of them, just drink a glass of water and think of something else.Or a teaspoon of sugar, or, or, or...get my point!! Good luck and I think that they are annoying too!!

They are spasms of the diaphragm. Causes vary, but mostly it happens when the esophagus gets temporarily blocked and air or gas is below the blockage and won't allow it to fall into the stomach.

Hmm im not sure how you get them but i know how to stop them..
Get a spoonful of peanut butter and put it on the bac k of your throat.
Hold your breath
Have someone ask u questions very quickly, and u have to answer them quickly
Have someone scare you
Or you can take a large glass of water and then take little amount of water and swallow hard for about 10 to 15 swallows and then on the last one, hold your breath untill u cant hold it any longer.<
