Arghh! Some ignorant answers!! Down syndrome is not caused by alcohol, drugs, or a tough birth; nor is Leukemia or Alzheimers inevitable by age 40.
Down Syndrome is due to genetic factors (an extra chromosome); it is random and can affect any pregnancy, but the chances of it occurring are greater in pregnant women over 35 years old.
I have a brother with down syndrome; he turned 41 two days ago. I also have a degree in Mental Retardation (politically correct or not, that is what my BA is called). Down syndrome affects people differently; there is a wide range of cognitive abilities- from normal intelligence to profoundly mentally handicapped. I have been around children and adults with down syndrome since I was 5 years old. Generally people with down's are delayed cognitively, but have sweet dispositions, and are very loving. They have a tendency to have low muscle tone, therefore they may be a little weaker and may need physical therapy (for large muscle development- usually walk later than typically developing kids), occupational therapy (fine muscle development- poor coordination, difficulty writing, manipulating buttons, zippers, etc), delays in self help skills (potty training, feeding, and in adults need help living on their own). Some people with down's have health problems (heart conditions, obesity) others don't. Depending on their health, they may live a normal life span.
The key is to continuously raise the bar on what they are taught. I have seen many disable people who are limited because their parents, teachers, or caregivers tend to baby them, not because they can't do things. My mother tends to do this to my brother, but his abilities surpass his disabilities when he is given support and encouragement.
He has a funny sense of humor, is an excellent swimmer, bowler, can do many things without assistance. He can read on a first grade level, do very simple math, tell time, and is learning money concepts (change). He will never do algebra or read Shakespeare, but that's OK. He can shop, knows more about music than I'll ever know, and loves to play pool and ride on a motorcycle (passenger). He is currently learning to be a spokesperson for Special Olympics so the needs of the athletes will be considered at the meetings. I'm proud of him. If you have someone with down's syndrome in your life, love & support them, encourage them, and try not to treat them like they are different. Best wishes.

Usually Down's syndrome kids dont live an average lifespan. A lot of states feel that the family should shoulder the burden of taking care of these folks especially as they get older and older which to me is heartwrenching when the parents die off and they end up on the streets.

There is no one single Paleo Diet, as our ancestors from all over the world ate dramatically different diets depending on the climate where they lived, their landscape, accessibility to water bodies, and the latitude that they lived. This is a detailed meal plan for the paleo diet https://tr.im/RrFxj

In some cases, a Paleo Diet may be 90% plant foods and 10% animal foods, and in other cases, a Paleo Diet may be 90% animal foods and 10% plant foods.

For example, our ancestors that lived near the equator had year long access to more plant materials such as root vegetables and various fruits, veggies, and nuts.

On the other hand, our ancestors that lived at higher latitudes further away from the equator only had access to fruits and vegetables seasonally at one specific time period per year, and had larger periods of the year where they ate a higher % of meats, organ meats, fish, and other animal-based foods, or fermented foods that could be stored for winter.
