This is his first ever test (using a One-Touch UltraSmart Test Kit)...He's been feeling sick and it seemed to be diabetes. The numbers came up 226. He is extremely resistant to the idea of an ER (he is an adult). What can be done to monitor him and improve his levels here at home until he can see his doctor in a few days?

OK, I am not looking for advice on how to eat, exercise etc, etc I see my diabetes educator 3 times a week , my Endocrinologist every 2 months plus my internal medicine doc. So I am well taken care of, I have been a type 1 diabetic for 12 years and 4 years ago I had a baby and was diagnosed with Graves disease soon after her birth. I have had the radioactive iodine treatment for my thyroid because my glucose levels were so high; I have changed my insulin for the old R & NPH to the Novolog and Lantus. My glucose levels are still high we have seen a small drop in the levels going from an average of 400-600 down to 200-400 usually in the high 300 to low 400 is where we are at now. I have had T-3 &T-4 blood tests and the thyroid hormone is pretty much gone we have not started the replacement hormone yet. Now this being said I had a talk with my internal medicine doctor a couple of days ago and he wants to put me on a medication that people with type 2 diabetes use. Is this normal, I have never heard of this and was wondering if anyone else had. If anyone knows someone who has done this or what the results might be.

I've had these problems as a child, would shake when hungry. Drs thought then I had hypoglycemia. I haven't questioned things since the diag of Begnin Essential Tremor, just knew when I get sick its time to eat. I forgot to bring food to work recently and got very sick. I looked at a man crossing the street and it looked like he skipped frames. It sounded like someone turned the volume all the way down & I got really dizzy. Last night my moods were ALL over the place, I started crying then after I ate I got happy for a short time. Then I felt everything plummet and I was a millisecond away from blacking out. Today I didn't get any better, the dr advised me to go to ER (my fiance said it looked like I was deteriorating). They did a random sugar test w/a home device(1.5hrs after a big bowl of turkey chilli w/soycheese)and it showed 94. Always thirsty, cannot drink enough water. Hungry EVERY 2 hours or I feel faint. The older I get, the sicker I get. I keep responding less to food.

Have you heard of any more progress in the transfer, grafting or reimplantation of "Islte's of Langerhans" Glands? I have several friends and family members who have suffered and died because of Diabetes.

They are really on an emotional rollercoaster this last week since they found out. They seem to be struggling with a few things (1) giving shots 4 times to a day and hurting their child is getting to them (2) it's forever (3) they are concerned about treatment- worried that they are not doing it right- she could have a low blood sugar episode, etc. (4) their daughter is confused and bummed out- they feel like this will break her spirit (5) they have other young kids and it's putting stress on all of them.

any advice on what we might to do to help, things we might be able to say to assuage their stress, or resources that they might use to help them transition? Anything.

thanks.

If a diabetic has his sugar levels under control, that the Hba1c level is normal, then does this mean that there will be no complications in the long run?

My father has had Diabetes for a good 20 years and been able to control the sugar. Then he had to have Triple Heart Bypass surgery, about 7 years ago. The Doctors used some of his veins from his legs, and for the last 5 years he has had pain in his legs and feet. Now the Doctors tell him he may loose a leg?
