For type I and type II diabetics.
I've found a wonderful book that will help you control your diabetes and minimize or even eliminate the complications. Some folks who became diabetic due to poor diet and obesity are effectively cured by following the advice in this book. I'm a type II, but it helps all types, especially those who became diabetic due to poor eating habits. It's by an author who has really done his homework, Patrick Quillin, Phd. I have tried his suggestions and found them to be very helpful. I have no complications whatsoever and my blood sugar levels are quite stable. Yes, I still have to take Metformin (Glucophage) daily, but it's the minimum dosage (500mg) and I only have to take it twice a day. I have been off Metformin for as much as a week, but this was with vigorous exercise. Many, what I call, non-hereditary type IIs (those that don't have a recent relative who had it) have gotten off medication completely, just with diet, exercise, and supplements. So, in some instances, it most certainly can be 'effectively' cured.
The book explains what's going on in our system and what to do about it. It's really easy and inexpensive. It's basically diet, supplements and exercise. For example, did you know that cinnamon helps blood sugar absorbtion? It also controls cholesterol and triglycerides. This is according to the USDA: http://www.ars.usda.gov/is/np/fnrb/fnrb0104.htm#pinch
For men: Are you suffering from erectile dysfunction? I was. Yes, WAS. Now that everything's under control, I'm able to have nearly normal sex again.

RE:
blood sugar is 226...?
This is his first ever test (using a One-Touch UltraSmart Test Kit)...He's been feeling sick and it seemed to be diabetes. The numbers came up 226. He is extremely resistant to the idea of an ER (he is an adult). What can be done to monitor him and improve his levels here at home until he can...

If you tested after a meal high in fat or sugar it would be elevated within the first hour or so. If he was fasting then it is not good. He is feeling sick because he is most likely in Diabetic Keytone Acidosis and if not treated quickly can cause death. My son has been a type 1 diabetic for 11 years and has been DKA 3 times and every time has been in ICU and at deaths door. Threaten to call a ambulance and tell him he needs to ASAP it damages the kidneys to start, is he going to bathroom lots thirsty and sick to stomach? He can go into a comma or even become violent do not delay

You haven't mentioned whether the reading 226 is taken fasting or after food (PPBS). You need not be panic, in either case. Ask him to stop eating sugar and sweets first. 226 is not any serious level, but you cannot ignore it. Human Mixtard is an insulin injection supplied in different per centages of soluble insulin and Isophane insulin. Consult the doctor first before taking such drugs. Don't be afraid as this is certainly controlable. I pray God to make him well soon.

A blood sugar of 226 is pretty high, but it's not really life-threatening. If it goes above 300, take him to the ER no matter what he says. Good luck.

I think you happen to have one of the best meters on the market. It will provide you with lots of information about your BG levels, trends and daily variations. A good book to get is by Dr. Richard Bernstein - Diabetic Solution, I believe. He is both an engineer and MD. He practices in NY. Anyway, it offers real live practical solutions. He needs to also get as much information about diabetes as he can absorb. Armed with knowledge, he'll know what to do and when. For you, you too can learn and assist his health. You both can go to a local endocrinologist - diabetes MD - for best control and education. If you have a computer, I would recommend getting the One-Touch software program to see patterns of his blood sugar control and can send printouts to the doctor.

not supposed to ever be 226 go to the er or tell him he could die. scare him to make him go. is he diagnosed as a diabetic? or just bought the kit to check it out? he needs to eat a balanced diet always -- this should happen after he goes to the ER or doctor right away and take the monitor with you to show them.

Does he have regular insulin? Insulin coverage is the only thing that would lower his Blood sugar. When my Pt's are in this range they are usually covered with 4 units of regular insulin.
