What does K 1 mean? What does it mean to cast on? Basically, how do I read a knitting pattern?

Note: I know how to do the Purl and Knit stitch.

Cast on 15 sts.
Knit across.
Row 2 : K 1, K 2 tog, K across row.
Row 3: K 1, P 2 tog, P across to last st, P 1.
Rows 4, 5, 6, & 7: Repeat rows 2 & 3. ( 9 sts)
Row 8: Cast on 2 sts at beg of row, then K 1, K 2 tog, K across row.
Row 9: Cast on 2 sts at beg of row, then K 1, P 2 tog, P across to last st, K 1.

I want to make something for my two Sunday school teachers... any suggestions? I'd love to make them each a personalized scarf, but I don't know how to either knit or crochet. :-(
Is it hard to learn? Anyway, what else could I make them? :-)

Thanks!

I don't have the World Book of Coins so i can't grade it, but does anyone know how much a Hong Kong Dollar dated 1960 in very good condition worth in USD, if anything? I'm not looking for the exchange rate, I'm wondering if this coin is worth anything to a coin collector.

Hi there

Does anyone know of any sites like this one http://www.picturepaper.com/ but for the UK? I was gutted, I was about halfway through making one for a mate of mine before finding out they only ship to the US. Any help at all would be great.

Thanks

Shaun

My child wants to learn how to build a functioning robot. I'm delighted, but haven't been able to find a beginning robotics kit for kids in toy stores or even educational stores. Does anyone know where I can find this? Is there a web site that specializes in this sort of thing?

I'm planning on cosplaying as Ryoko Asakura from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. I already know how to make the sailor collar, and I have a pretty good idea for the shirt and cuffs. However, I'm having quite a problem finding the pattern for the skirt. If anyone knows where to find the pattern, please tell me ;-;

I would like to knit a scarf for someone who has been very helpful to me and as he is an extrovert type of guy I thought it would be nice to knit his name along the length of the scarf.
Does anyone know of a pattern to do this. I don't mind paying for it as it will save me time experimenting.
I have found a few patterns for knitted alphabets but I am not sure if they will be in proportion sideways since I will be knitting up from the short edge of the scarf.

I am feeling very frustrated because I have a sewing machine, which I can do basic things with, but when it comes to changing sizes or turning a pair of trousers into a skirt, I am stuck!

I have found a site, but just as I got exited, they wanted a fee off me. If I had the money, I would not have minded paying for it was a good site.

Can anyone give me some ideas?
