with knitting all you need to know is the basic stitches knit and purl. if you use super bulky weight yarn with size 15 needles you can get a scarf done before christmas. if you crochet and use the same kind of yarn and crochet hook you can get a scarf done alot faster.
take a look at this site, this is how i got started to knit and been hooked since.

this site will help you how to crochet.

crochet is faster than knitting since the stitches are bigger, but uses about 20% more yarn compared to knitting. dont forget keep practicing and then next year you can make them something more.
just to warn you both crafts are quite addicted. :D

How about a fleece scarf? That would be fastest.
New Sew Fleece Scarf: You could go to your local fabric store and purchase 1/4 yard of fleece that you like for each scarf. Take it home and cut "fringe" on both narrow ends about 3-4 inches long about 3/4 to 1 inch apart. Voila! Instant scarf!
To crochet or knit a scarf: will take a lot more time since you need to learn how to do either one. There are several websites that will teach you how to do basic stitches. I like www.lionbrandyarn.com best myself however there are several out there. Joann Fabrics sells DVD's for about $6.99 each put out by Red Heart yarn company entitled Crochet Made Easy and Knitting Made Easy. You will also have to by yarn and knitting needles or crochet hooks. A basic scarf can be done with one skein of yarn for either knitted or crocheted.
To sew a scarf, you will need to learn how to sew. Basic sewing is easier than crocheting or knitting. Again, using 1/4 yard of fabric, fold over about 1/4 inch all of the way around. This will be your hem. Stitch it in place usuing a basic straight stitch. Be sure you back-stitch at the start and ending points a few stitches so that the stitching does not unravel.
In order of easiest to hardest as well as fastest to slowest would be...
No Sew Fleece Scarf
Sewn Scarf
Knit or Crocheted Scarf

I'm a Sunday school teacher and as much as I would love a hand made scarf, those take time and effort that you just don't have. (However I would recommend learning to knit at lionbrandyarn.com, its fun and easy), but what I love from my students is personalized ornaments they made for my Christmas tree that has the students name and year on it. You can make so many different kinds, check out Michaels or any other craft store for ideas.

You could learn an easy crochet stitch in literally 10 minutes. It's very easy! I wish I could describe it to you. Go to Walmart. In the craft section, you can find a book of easy crochet stitches. I have only had maybe a couple months of practice and i can churn out a scarf in 3 hours! Very easy!

Knitting and crocheting take a bit of time to learn, but they are worth the time and the effort. However, you don't have enough time to complete these two project as a beginner before the holidays.
A great alternative that is still knitting but easy is to use a knitting loom. Using a small loom is very easy to learn how to do and fairly inexpensive. I purchased a small loom for about 5 dollars and a set of 4 different sized looms for 12 dollars.
Personalized gifts are so much more appreciated than something bought from the store. Good luck and happy crafting.

I have had no luck with knitting but I have just started to use the kniffty knitter and have already churned out two great hats! Just do a search for it and you will come across a lot of easy patterns for it. I bought mine at Michael's Craft store. I think they sell them at Walmart also. I use the round ones. Merry Christmas!

Crochet is very easy to learn. Sewing is fun but you wouldn't be able to learn gift quality sewing by Christmas. Here is a beginner crochet site
http://crochet.about.com/library/blbegscarf.htm
Or you could do these fleece ones without sewing.

All of those require practice. Its nothing that you can learn over night. Just go to a store and pick up two nice scarfs. They dont have to be expensive. ITs just easier

How about a big tin of cookies for each of them? When I was working full-time I never had the time for cookies during the holidays, and very much appreciated receiving decorated holiday cookies as gifts. A batch of fudge, a plate of brownies, a loaf of holiday bread, anything homemade would be welcome.
