If I'm using 4 strands of yarn & size 50 needles, will it take long to knit a blanket? I want to have one done by Christmas.

Those big stitches will get you there quicker, but it still depends on how fast you can knit. Some people can do it in 2 evenings, others may need more time.

you will definitely be able to finish it by christmas. here is a warning, size 50 needles are harder to work with than you think. you might actually finish faster if you go down to size 35 needles, as they are easier to manipulate. Basically knit a swatch, about 20 stitches by 30 rows, and measure it. count how many stitches there are in 4 inches, and how many rows. That is your gauge. this is also a good way to see if you like how it looks. also keep track of how long it took you to knit that practice piece. remember it will go much faster after the third row, but still this is a good guesstimate on how much time it will take to make your blanket. also, how big do you want your blanket?
here are some standard sizes
The standard mattress sizes (below) provide a guideline to use when you can't
measure a specific bed. These are TOP OF THE BED only:

Crib: 27x52 inches
Youth: 33x66 inches
Twin: 39x74 inches
Full: 54x74 inches
Queen: 60x80 inches
King: 78x80 inches
