One way to make door beads is to use papier mache. Use coloured magazine pages and cut triangles 1" at the base and about 4" long. (These measurements are flexible). Using a knitting needle or something similar, roll the paper up starting from the 1" end. Glue the tip down and slip the finished bead off the knitting needle. When they ar dry, simply make strings of the required length. You can use alternate with bought beads as well to add variety.

Do you want to know how to make beads for threading then hanging in a doorway, or do you want to know how to string then hang beads in a doorway?

You can use any kinds of "beads" you want, but beware (especially if making them) that it takes a LOT of beads (unless you leave empty spaces on the cording or chaining), and that some beads can be quite heavy when there are a lot of them.

As for hanging, I don't know how it's done traditionally, but if you want them to hang in place permanently I'd probably attach the top end of each one to a narrow board or something, then nail the board to the inside of the door frame. If I wanted them to slide, I'd put a large jump ring at the top of each or even a shower curtain rings, then string the rings on a dowel or a pressure bar and put at the top of the doorway.

(One way to get lots of wood beads, at least, is by buying one of those car seat things that uses all beads, then taking it apart.)
