I know it's worth one cent, but will it be like one of those rare coins?

I believe, and it has been awhile that one of the 1944 pennies is worth about 45 dollars. Has to do with the place of mint.

Here is a case where the coin has more of a historical value, than a monetary one. The 1944 cent had a mintage of 1,435,4000,000. It was the first time a cent hit the billion mark. 1944 was also the year the U.S. and her allies started to do serious damage to Germany and Japan. Maybe your cent was part of the pay for some women who had just built a plane or tank. Your coin comes from the days of Rosie the Riveter. Your coin has a story to tell but, it will keep it's secrets. One can only imagine where it went and who spent it during the war. Your coin sells for .05-.10 cents in a coin dealers wheat cent box. Not a lot of money but an item worth keeping. Find an old timer like myself but maybe a little older and show him the cent and see what he has to say about 1944. All I can say is it was the year I was born.

It all has to do with where the penny was made and the condition. Pennies made before 1950 were made out of pure copper, so if your willing to try (depending on the condition) auction it or sell it to a private collector. After all, it is worth something reason being, the United States Mint doesn't make pennies out of copper anymore. Just a mix of copper, nickel and zinc.

most coin shops will buy the "wheat" pennies, but only in complete rolls of 50

They pay between 55 and 60 cents for a roll of 50 pennies.

SO technically, your penny might be worth 1.1 cents, etc.
