Hobbies & Crafts - July 2007

There used to be loads of good fabric shops. I could go to about seven easily in the town that I used to live in. All but one have closed down, and that one sells rubbish. There's none at all in my current my home town. There's three market stalls but what they sell is 'tat.'. I've just found some online fabric shops, but I hesitate as it wouldn't be the same as going into a shop. I miss the smell of the fabrics, the sight of all the gorgeous colours and handling various fabrics. When I stopped dressmaking I didn't figure on this feeling that I'm missing out on something that is my blood, and that I need! How do you feel about it, and if you still make clothes, where do you buy fabrics?

I have a really awesome idea for a birthday present. I want to make a notebook with a cover that looks like the front of an acoustic guitar with the strings on it and a hole in the center of the front cover..etc.

I just need to know how to make a notebook quickly and easily. I don't have time to order special supplies online, I don't know how to bind a book. I just know what I want on the cover. Help please!

do you try to get these collectibles at reasonable prices and where do you shop?
If not..do you like to "Barter or haggle" with others at different places...and lastly..what have you collected that you KNOW is worth a lot and what will you do with the item or items...keep or sell or show off?

I saw an article showing the chrysanthemum, willow, maroon, pistil, ring shell, round shell,and palm. I know there are lots more but I wonder what they are called. When I'm laying on that blanket watching the show I'd like to know more about what I'm seeing.

A web site that shows the display with a name and description would be helpful. Anybody seen that?

I am sewing a dress from a vintage pattern that calls for seam binding. Being a beginner, I asked a clerk at Joann's to help me find some seam binding...she directed me instead to what looks like sew-on hem tape. How do I use this as seam binding, and if I have been misled, what do I use instead? It will be used on the sleeves. Thanks!

The tension on my bobbin is right, but I think I installed the shuttle incorrectly. I'm not sure how far over it's supposed to be. Any tips or pictures on how to install it correctly would be much appreciated.
